So i took my car out today to get some gas checked out the Auto meter guages, Oil Press was at 50 psi and water temp was at 180 after about 5 min, i was on my way home about a 1/2 mile away and i notice my Oil Press guage is at 0 i began to freak but the engine felt good, i feathered it the rest of the way home and let it sit for about an hour hoping it was a faulty sending unit or wiring or something, i fired it up, and still no oil pressure and this time some pretty good noise coming from the engine, only ran for about 2 secs like this, im hoping i didnt destroy the motor. So does this sound like an oil pump gone bad or something worse??? Engine has 150k on it!! This wouldnt be a problem if i had money, id just get a 347 stroker but i aint got the ducks right now

Have you checked the oil level? What kind of noise was it making? What color is the oil?

Oil level is perfect, the color is good its like a medium-light brown color definetly doesnt need changed, but the engine is making a pretty loud ticking noise. Not like a rocker tick noise much louder than that, it sounds bad to me. Sound like an enigne running with no oil, lol, this freakin blows

it might be that the pump went out and now your lifters need to be pumped back up b/c they bled back down. if it was quiet when u cut the car off you might still be ok with just putting a pump in it. good luck keep us posted.

well the easiest way to tell if it getting oil is to pull the valve cover off and prime the pump

That sucks man...i have that nightmare every once in a while and wake up freaking out! I would do as some other suggested and pull a valve cover and see if you are getting enough oil to the top end. Also where did you think the noise was comming from? Is it only one side or is it both sides? top or bottom?

If you have zero oil pressure AND loud noises, your pump either pooped out, or you lost the shaft. Either way, your pretty much gonna have to pull the motor. Sorry.

while on the topic, what exactly happens when an oil pump goes bad? I tore my old one down and all it is is a housing and a rotor, and a valve to let excess pressure out, i dont see much that can go wrong here.

i just dont know lol

Motor is pulled out and the oil pump froze up and twisted the oil pump driveshaft right in two, it looks like a drill bit, lotta work for a 30 dollar pump, oh well, im cleaning everything up real nice taking advantage of the situation

relief valves get stuck open, excessive clearances between rotors and backplate. http://sbftech.com/index.php/topic,84.0.html
