Oh oh...oil pressure gauge dancing like a white man to reggae

Help....

Here's the story...the other day...let's make a long story short here...

the other day i actually drove my car to it's capabilities for the first time in a long time...perhaps the first time in 6 years...anyway, i don't think it was ready for it..

My oil pressure gauge is dancing back and forth during idle...like crazy...with even the smallest rev, it goes back to normal, and during driving, there's no issues, only when i'm stopped, and only after the cars warmed up to where it normally sits on the temp gauge...

Mech's tell me it's either the gauge itself, or the pump....I want to know how to check each of these, or if there's any simple way to tell what the problem is, out of the two.

Any other suggestions as to what the problem might be? Easy fixes?

Well there is not much to do to test the stock guage except to replace the sending unit. They are cheap and easy to replace. If that does not fix the problem then it's probably the pump or the screen. This might be a stupid question but is it full of oil?

sounds like it might be the pump get aftermarket gauge on there to make sure though.

Mine does it, too; it's a ground issue. Do you get any alternator noise through your stereo? The stock oil pressure gauge is more of a dummy gauge than anything. You should probably throw an aftermarket gauge on just to be sure, but I'm betting on it being an electrical issue, not mechanical.

Yeah the stock gauge is sort of an on and off guage. If there is pressure then it will be on. Most likely it is a short in your gauge that is causing it to move around.

With the STOCk gauge, I would think it's more electrical than anything else.

I had this problem... then realized i was over due on an oil change... itd be fine, then drop to nothing and come back, and do it again... changed oil and it was fine, thnk my filter was clogged good..

how long has it been since u changer urs?

XKC, if the filter clogs, it bypasses. Not enough info was given about your situation, so the filter could have been it. But it was perhaps worth noting the bypass feature for future reference.

Aaron, I dont know if anyone mentioned it (I dont think so), but put a real gauge on there.

Seriously, the other guys were right on. You need a real gauge.

I agree.. stock gauge is worth nothing... Now if you wanted you can even hook up a cheap gauge to monitor it temporarily since it is just a 1/8" npt thread into the block... But if you are going to go that route you may as well jsut change the sender and put in an aftermarket gauge...
