OIL? 2001 GT Vert

So, I'm looking into changing the oil in the mustang. I've had the car for about a month and a half and I feel it's time. Doing research, I seem to be finding that most Gt owners are using full syn. I have no idea what the previous owner put in this car, all I know is i want to do it right. Now, I'm working on a budget, so what are your opinions? I was looking around and thiking of the Ford Motorcraft full syn or syn blend with a FMC oil filter. Also if its running dino oil right now, should I leave that in it?

Just run over to wal-mart and get the 5 quart jug of Motorcraft syn blend (IIRC it's 5W30). As long as you change it regularly it really doesn't matter what brand of oil you use.

i use the motorcraft 5/20 blend go 5k miles and change. In my truck i use full synthetic and go 10k and maybe change the filter once. I always check the leves though becuase both cars will use some

Never shop at Walmart no matter how tempting it may be... I hear the Chinese pee in the oil sent over here... j/k about the pee...

Mobil 1 is the way to go... and a good oil filter. No Frams!

I wouldn't buy anything from Walmart on principle, not because I think their products are substandard (although many are I doubt their oil is somehow "bad"...)

I agree with N8Dogg: Don't focus too heavily on spending big bux for full-synth when a blend that has at least an API rating of SL will work just fine. The key with any oil is to keep it clean. If you don't drive often or very far you'll want to change it more frequently.

I will say to stick with a Ford OE oil filter. In my experience they have the best anti-drainback valve. This helps to keep oil in the galleries when the engine is stopped which makes for a quieter and less nerve-wracking cold start-up later.

I only buy my oil and my filters there because they have great deals, otherwise I hate waiting in line at that damn place. IIRC the motorcraft filter is only like $3.50 and a 5 quart jug of motorcraft 5W-20 is only $11 or $12.

I know this is more of a FC thing, but those of you who are against walmart, keep in mind that walmart has helped many poor people because it provides them a means to purchase inexpensive food conveniently.

At the risk of derailing this thread, I'll just say that Walmart could help many poor people if it didn't source everything on its shelves from mainland China. If Walmart and its ilk chose to support American (or Canadian ) suppliers some of those "poor" people might actually have jobs and wouldn't be so poor. The other issue I have with them is that their business model is leading to the destruction of smaller mom and pop operations and even threatening entire downtown cores as they suck the economic life out of them.

But that's just me. I'm sure their oil and filters are fine

They do sell Motorcraft oil and Motorcraft filters, so unless Ford has decided to outsource production of these items I'm still buying products made in the good old USA

First of all Walmart destroys communities and then tries to look like they are helping. It's been proven that a lot of their "American made" products ARE built in China with the licensed specs of the manufacturer. It's not about their prices it's about who they really are.

Back on topic...

Your filter is more important than your oil. Choose wisely Grasshopper. I use K&N. Pure One, Motorcraft and Wix are fine too.

6 quarts (EVERY 4.6L 2v owner should be putting 6 quarts in the engine, regardless of year) of Motorcraft 5w30 (or 5w20, but 5w30 would be "better" for a higher mile engine) and a Motorcraft FL-820S oil filter.

Unfortunately they don't sell Motorcraft 5w30 in the 5-quart jugs.

As much as I hate to say it, I get my oil and filter from Walmart. A quart of oil there is almost two dollars less expensive than Advance or Autozone.

My owners manual says 5 quarts in 2 different places if I remember correctly(too lazy to go get it). 5 also is right at the top of the full line on my car's dipstick too.

Why do you say 6?

ok, so i remember someone on a different forum saying 4.5-5 quarts. i have always filled my engine up with 4.75 (about) quarts. am i harming my engine? could it possibly burn oil easier?

what do you guys think about that

It must depend on model year or something. My Chilton says 5 quarts, but mine won't read full until there I add 6 quarts. I'd go by what the dipstick says and figure it out from there.
