oil change...

So i'm gonna do some maintnance work on my car this weekend.
Oil change, and coolant change, clean up the 6 month worth os dust and make my car street legal.

Now I've been using 5W-20(Mobile 1 equivlent of 0W-20) for a while now, and I've had no issue with it.
But i got thinking now that my car have 40000miles, Isn't 0W-20 little too thin?
Should I switch to little thicker oil?? If so what others are using?

Nah, you're find with the 5w-20. You could go up to a 30 weight oil, but if the 20 weight is working just fine for you, there's no reason to switch to 30.

It's common practice for some folks to switch over to a thicker oil weight if they start burning oil - this remedy is nothing more than a band-aid solution (works great in old beater cars LOL).

what you mean by that? I use 5w-30 full synthetic MOBIL 1. What kind of oil are you using, and how can you say 5w-20 of xxxx is the same as 5w-20 of mobil 1?? 0w-20 is 0w-20, 5w-20 is 5w-20......

Mobil 1 0w20 says on the bottle "reccomended for high performance 5w20 applications - Meets honda, ford, blah blah blah standards". I used it for my last oil change, though I only drove the car like 1200 miles with it.

Way i was told is that 5W-20 is Ford registered name.
So if Mobile1 is gonna make one, and call it "5W-20", they would had to pay assload of greens to Ford. So they just came up with their own name

I don't know that it's a Ford grade.. I was just at the Honda dealership and was looking under the hoods of cars and noticed most of their V6 applications call for 5W-20.. Never knew that one before, so it kinda intrigued me a bit and I actually remembered

No i dont know who told you that but they were definately pulling your chain...or they legitamately thought that.

5w-20 or any oil designation, refers to the "winter" and grade selection of an oil and is set by the SAE and can not be owned or copywrited by any company.

If you have been using 0w-20 thinking its 5w-20, you haven't been. You've just simply been using 0w-20.

And while 5w-20 is the "recommended" oil by Ford for our vehicles, as it promotes the best gas milage... 5w-30 is really better for our cars, performance wise. TECHNICALLY though, you should change oil grades with the seasons, and should be running lower in grades in the winter, and higher in the summer...but i just stay with 5w-30 the whole time.

It is just fine, and its what ford recommends to get the best gas mileage. Its just a little thin, and the 30 can be a little better. I'll have to try and look it up

I have found that with almost all things the factory recommendation is best. Ford recommends 5W-20 for my car and that is what I use.

And do not bother with the "blah blah blah CAFE blah blah .2 extra miles per gallon blah blah blah" because I have heard it before and I do not care.

I will use the fluids that Ford specifies and I will buy them from Ford as well. You can do what you want, its your car and your money

In most cases, some manufacturers dont even make 5w-20. And that is why 5w-30 is recommended. I dont even think Mobil 1 makes 5w-20...which is another reason why i use their full synthetic 5w-30
