Noticed that the car was leaking oil today and after investigation I learned that the filter had a hairline crack it in from rubbing the front sway bar! I have always seen a little metal worn off the filter but not a geyser blowing crack! I'm not sure if my car has bigger sway bars on it bc its a ssp or just aftermarket, but I need to solve this problem! I am trying to find a shorter filter since it is close to the last 1/4 inch of the filter. Has anyone heard of this or have a nifty solution?

I've honestly never heard of this happening. Maybe your motor mounts are shot and making the motor sit out of whack?

maybe idk. I was running a Wix filter #51515 from oreilly's and one of the few guys that are good up there found me a Microgard MGL8A which on paper should be the same but real life is about an inch shorter. The crack was at the very bottom, so I should have plenty of clearance now but tomorrow will tell when I put it on.

That's strange. The oil filter on my car isn't anywhere near the sway bar. Might want to check your engine mounts?

I run a motorcraft FL-1A

Yea, my oil filter is a mile away from the sway bar. Something aint right there. Either your motor mounts or your sway bar is installed incorrectly.

thanks for the tips guys! I got the car before a deployment and didn't get to much play around time, so I have been playing catch up lately. I took a look and the motor mounts look pretty crappy, which means I will be replacing those soon.

Does your filter face forward or down to the side?

Hmm, sounds like it might have that 90* oil filter adapter mounted on it

I can take a pic if you guys want but I have discovered that the motor mounts are thrashed! but even with the new filter on there I can't slide my finger in between the sway bar and shorter filter!

here ya go you can see on the second pic how it was rubbing and how the new one that is almost an inch shorter has barely any clearance!

That engine is so out of kilter I'd suggest that a) The only thing holding it in the car is gravity, and b) you should have a serious look at your transmission crossmember and all of its mounts too.
