oil in intake?

i think my pcv valve is sucking oil into the lower intake manifold because when i changed my plenum i saw of coating of oil in there. can oil in the intake cause my exhaust to smoke ocassionally?

I dont know much about ford engines yet, but I can tell you that GM engines have done this for years. The throttle body usually has a hose attached to it that runs to your heads, what it does is takes all of the smoke and pressure created by your engine and circulates it into your intake to be burned, so you don't have smoke pouring out of your hood somewhere. the pcv valve is just a check ball inside of that system. Some people put a "catchcan" in line with that hose, so the oil will drop into the can, and not get up to your intake. Hope this helps.

thanks, yeah i am going to put catchcans on this week. could the oil in the intake cause smoking in my exhaust though?

I had this problem, until recently when i finaly changed my pcv valve. I was getting oil sucked into the intake at high rpms, the pcv was stuck. Also I think that if any of the vacum lines are loose or off that can cause it too...

But yeah my car was burning oil about a quart per 3000 miles until i changed the pcv valve so far so good, going on 2 months no oil smell.....

Depends on the color of the smoke. The white is just steam from a warm exahust hitting cooler air such as you see from a car in the winter but goes away after initial warm-up as the moisture evaporates from the exhaust. Blue smoke (and you will see this no matter what time of year) is oil burning. Usually what happens is the valve seals become weak, allowing oil to drain past and causing burn-off of the excess oil through the exhaust. This will go away after warm-up on most ocassions too after the settled oil is burnt. The smell is the tell-tale sign. Burnt oil is very strong and not mistaken for just H2O and O2. The PCV allowing oil into the intake would cause some smoke if there was sufficient amount to make it to the exhaust before burning itself up. The only way to know for sure is to remove the PCV and make sure it is not clogged. Better yet, get a new one and replace it. They are cheep and you will find out if that is your smoke problem.

can running lean or rich also cause smoke to come out of my exhaust. im getting a tune as soon as i get the money. i changed the pcv valve and i think it helped it. anyways, about a second after i rev it up in neutral a little bit of smoke comes out of the tailpipes. should i be worried? i dont have cats but it still smokes when it is warm outside
