Oil pan and front assembly: 331 stroker

My 331 just came in today (ill take some pictures, dont worry), and now im about to get ready to assemble it. I still need front timing cover, water pump, ect. (all external components except alternator.) My question is this: Do I need a front sump pan and pickup for my motor? I would like to keep the stock belt set up, for simplicity and the fact that I still have the pullies/fan/belt. If so, what front timing cover would I need, and what oil pan set up? The motor is a late (89 I believe) 5.0 based.

You need an early style oil pan and pickup. You can use your stock 289/302 timing cover. Plug the dipstick hole in the side of the block while you are changing the oil pans. If the motor doesn't have it on there already, I'd use a 1 piece oil pan gasket. I think the Fel-Pro is better than the Ford motorsport gasket. If you are going with the vbelt setup get yerself an Edlebrock waterpump for the early engines. If you are going with the serpentine setup use a 5.0 water pump. I prefer the serpentine setup myself, so much easier and cleaner IMO and it uses a reverse rotation drivers side water pump.

So I can go with front sump style pan and pick up, with a 65 front timing cover, with early style water pump.

What kind of pan are you going with? A recent poster here mentioned he got what he thought was an oem style pan, but was deeper. He needed to add more oil to get to the pickup tube.

If you're going to go with a larger pan---don't forget the correct pickup. Also, they'll tell what gasket to use. Canton IIRC does not like the one piece gaskets.

I was thinking canton deep sump pan 7qt, with their pick up. What do you guys think of windage trays? worth it on a stroker motor?

That's the pan I have, Canton 7qt with the pick up, good stuff, no worries. I have no windage tray but I got a girdle...

I meant your pan, pickup, ect. I might order through Canton direct, but their prices are higher.

My opinion: if you run 5 qts in your 7qt pan, you won't have much windage to fight. If you use a windage tray, you will reduce splash oiling to the cam and pistons/piston pins. Do you have forced pin oiling? If not, you might want to reconsider the tray. I generally just run 5-6 qts of oil. Car goes like stink.
