I know that in 77' ford used 2 different starters because the 4.5" housing doesn't fit so you have to buy the 4" housing starter. I'm assuming that the reason for that was because the pan was changed. I know that the 4.5" starter hits the pan and will not fit the early 77'. I don't know if thats the reason they changed starters but to me, thats can be the only reason. If anyone know better please correct me.........I would like to know if what I'm saying is correct... Thanks....
