Hey guys, I'm currently rebuilding my motor and have gone with a 331 kit. I ordered ARP studs for the mains and a Melling HV oil pump and I am reusing the stock pickup and oil pan (all from a 1988 motor).
I clayed the pickup and only found .205" of clearance, which is below what is recommended. Then I realized that the pan was not seating all the way. Finally figured out that the pan was making contact with the pickup tube around the number 2 main.
After an hour of head scratching I figured out what it is. If you look at the stock number 3 bolt with the stud for the pickup, the head of the bolt is very short, maybe less than a 1/4" tall. The ARP stud uses a washer, which is almost as tall as the head on the stock bolt, followed by a large nut, which is double the size in heigth of the stock bolt. This pushes my pickup assembly down towards the oil pan probably close to a 1/2". Thus creating the interference.
I am waiting for Monday so I can call ARP and ask them about it. I replaced the one stud with the stock bolt and verified that it did work with the stocker, but I don't want to run it like that if I can use the ARP stud. Has anyone else had this problem? If so, how did you correct it?
