Oil Pressure PSI>>> Is 23 Good?

93 LX 5.0 63,000 Original Miles

So when I first crank the 93, it gets a little over 50psi of oil pressure. After 200 degrees and 10 minutes of driving it's down to 22-24.

Is that low

I think the car has Synthetic 5w sumthin in it and I'm gonna go get 10w30 synthetic today I guess.

Depends... i had a similar problem with my car. Switched out from the 5w30 to a 10w40 and got all of my pressure back.

Warm idle = 25PSI
Warm Cruise = 50PSI

Cold Idle = 30PSI
Cold Cruise = 60PSI

Try switching your oil first...

No worries strype..if it's hot go to a 10-40, when the oil gets hot (not really measured by temp gauge..I'm talkin oil temp) pressure will drop as the oil really begins to thin...I my opinion your looking at pretty good pressure that will come up nicely with the heavier oil. Though my mill is pretty low miles I can definately tell when oil temps are getting up higher (usually when outside temps are killer and or I'm running her hard)...my usual 50PSI will get into the low to mid 40s at hot idle and if given the chance to sit for 10 minutes and cool off pressure comes right back up.

i have a oil leak so i cant ever tell my real oil pressure but when i fill it, and before it all runs out i usualy have 45-50 PSi at 180* + on my heat gauage

that is with 10w30 should i go with 10w40

Your pressure seems fine....what exactly is your question? And not to be rude, but I hope your kidding about the leak, any leak that can empty your pan is SERIOUSLY needing to be addressed ASAP.

23 p.s.i at hot idle int he middle of the summer with a 30 weight oil is fine. I run 10W-40 in mine in the summer and if I set and idle and the oil gets really hot it will sometimes dip to right at 20 p.s.i

Thanks guys that makes me feel much better. Since it's original milage I was afraid that time may have taken its toll on the car.

My buddy, the previous owner, worked at an oil change shop and has 5w sumthin in it synthetic, so I'll try 10w40 synthetic and see if that helps

my front oil pan seal is leaking i dont feel like pulling the motor but im going to have to, i leak about a quart of oil every 300 kilometers

I agree in full. That 5-weight is a little watery for my Guiness-like taste in oil weights for hot climates.

But remember.......... that same synthetic is also providing very good cling protection (esp if it's got some PAE basestock in it) so while pressure isnt as high as you'd like, oil is still stickin' to the shiny parts.

Drain that old oil into a container and reuse it this winter.

Strypey, my 150K+ mile engine, has approx 5psi oil pressure at Idle. It rattles and knocks on every startup. I've been driving it for over a year like this, and it still wont die. I'd be ecstatic If mine had 20psi or more.

i am bringing this thread back. i just got the car up and running again with new performance parts. it has new bearings and crank.the oil pressure is 55 when cold and 25 at idle and when i rev it is goes to 35-40 psi. i got cheap 10w30 for the first few miles. i checked it and it is really thin. i am in conroe,tx and it's sort of hot. i am going to try 20w50 in it. by reading these posts, looks like i am ok. what do you guys think.

Da, were the tolerances set a little loose during the rebuild?

It kinda sucks to need 20W-50 right off the bat (I assume your temps are not unlike ours in Tucson - mid 90's right now). I might try some 10-40 first - your pressure really isnt all that out of line as it is anyhow.

well here is the thing i took the crank with the brand new bearings out of the other block i had. i plastigauged them and it came out withing spec. not sure what it was because it was a long time ago. i ran out of plastigauge and did not do it when i switched the crank and bearings to this motor.
