oil pressure question(dont think its been posted yet)

ok so on my 87 gt because i have speed density and huge cam and heads i have the surging idle, the question is when my idle drops to about 800 my oil pressure gauge turns off i can hear it click. when the idle comes back up it returns to normal and stays that way while driving! is it just my gauge or is the oil pump turning on and off??? it only shuts off for a second or so then turns back on!!

If your oil pump is mechanical it shouldn't turn off at low idle, but you will have a lower oil pressure at idle... also the stock gauge is garbage

as far as i know its a stock oil pump...

put a real mechanical guage on it and warm it up to hot idle and see what a real guage says - if it drops to less than 13lbs at hot idle with a real guage you will want to pull the pan and pull the bearings. If it stays above that you can replace the sending unit to see if it fixes it - good luck - been there - rebuilt it!

Good suggestions above definatly hook up another oil gauge . Im a speed density fan what cam are you running?
