How can I prime the oil pump without starting the car? I didnt start my car for 2 months now...Its in storage and didnt have time to go see it. I want to prime the pump so that oil get to the block so when I start it I wont be damaging anything. Thanks
Pull the distributor out. You'll need (it's been a while, so this might be wrong) a 1/4" socket to fit on the oilpump driveshaft. I use an impact atached to a 1/2" by 3/8" adapter. Then a long 3/8" extension atached to a 3/8" by 1/4" adapter. Then a deep socket.
you could also just disconnect your coil wire and crank the car for about 10-15 seconds, probably not as good as the method mentioned above but it still works to some degree
you will only be puting oil on half the block buy just puting it in. you would not be getting the oil to the lifters and rockers and other stuff on the other side of the motor. also if you do prime the engine with a drill remember it spins in reverse and to mark the location of the distibutar before you take it out.
if you do use a socket like 88poslx said, make sure the socket doesn't get stuck on the motor and fall off when you take it off the oil pump.
Another thing you can do is pull out the plugs and squirt a little Marvel Mystery oil into each cylinder. Somebody mentioned cranking the motor with the coil wire disconnected, that technically will work but won't actually do much of anything because it doesn't turn the oil pump fast enough. Usually, when a car sits the thing to worry about is lubricating the cylinder walls. The bottom end is less prone to failure because the engine bearings are softer than the crank and rods and tend to not tear $hit up.
