Engine Oil Pump Question

With a high volume pump the oil pump shaft should be replaced, too. The shaft is located under the distributor and the factory ones have been known to shear off under hard driving conditions. ( happened to me )

The high pressure pump also sends oil to the top of the motor faster.....at high rpms people have had issues with running the pan dry because oil didn't return as fast as it went up. ( never witnessed it personally )

Not sure how much either would effect a mild street driven car, but I'd get a hardened shaft if I were you.

A high volume pump is not a high pressure pump. It seems the terms are used interchangeably above. A high volume pump will move more oil for each rotation. It will not raise your oil pressure above factory specification, but can move more oil to places that need it, especially if your bearing clearances are excessive (worn engine), and can increase oil pressure that is too low (due to those same worn-engine clearances). A high pressure pump will have stiffer relief-valve springs and will actually result in higher oil pressure. It will not necessarily move larger amounts of oil.

The negatives of high-volume pumps are the shaft issues as mentioned and that 'sucked the pan dry' thing that is unlikely in our lower-revving 5.0's. High pressure pumps can damage seals.

To address your initial question, a high volume pump should not cause you to use more oil or decrease your oil change intervals. The gauge on our cars is a dummy gauge, it only reads on or off (so you won't notice a change in position with higher pressure), but looked cooler than an idiot-light I guess.
