I read the posts and want to verify. When installing a new oil pump shaft with the "star"washer attached. The oil pump shaft gets installed from the bottom (oil pump end) into the block The "star" washer fits close to but not against (maybe a 1/4" maximum clearance) to the underside of the boss where the distributor fits into (inside the engine block). I am assuming that this washer will prevent the shaft from being pulled up and out of the oil pump as the "star" washer will "hit" the underside of the distributor hole boss in block preventing this from happening. I have read all types of posts of guys losing the shaft in the block and don't want to become another. Am I correct in my assumptions? Thanks, brian

You are spot on. The clip keeps the shaft from pulling out when you remove your distributor later.
