So there I was shopping for an oil pump. I tried new and re-man units, from Ford, jobbers and even Canadian Tire. There seems to be a depleated number of manufacturers/re-manufacturers of oil pumps for turbo blocks. Am I right to assume the 84 and 87-88 engines carry the same pump...I don't see why it would be different. Do the turbo cars have a unique pump? I am confused because I'd assume all 2.3s would carry the same pump and the P/N# should just "change up" to a newer model 2.3L car, yes/no?
If I can't find a pump for my application, I have two options...ship one up from the U.S. (border fee$ = double your money) or get one for a late 90s Ford Ranger with 2.3L.(<--would it fit?)

Oil Pump

Just checked Discount Autoparts and they are showing a different pump for the 87 turbo and the 87 mustang or 93 ranger (non-turbos). I would say you should get what it requires, probably the turbo requires more capacity or higher pressures.

I'd like to see that way too, but the oil pan is a standard size and usually if you run a hi-vol pump you also add a deep sump or side pouch pan...I'd hope Ford would think of that too or owners could have problems. As far as hi-pressure goes, there are pumps available for the 2.3...if the stock pump is hi-pressure then the A/M pumps would be super-hi-pressure I guess , eh!

DO NOT use a high pressure or high volume pump with a 2.3...you'll destroy the dizzy gear and send metal flowing into your oil pan...stock replacement is all you'll ever need.

please correct me if I am wrong here but dosnt the higher pressure cause problems with the rear turbo seal since it was only designed out for something like 30 psi?

The difference when it comes to pan types is with the pickup tube/sump which will interchange.

Thankyou for mentioning that...I think I've asked that question before and am having a problem in trying to locate a stock replacement pump.
