hello, the gasket that goes between the pump and block is bad. it is bad because i made it out of cardboard and i didn't think it would work for long and it did not. i went out and bought a gasket kit. it comes with a rubber/fiber sheet and says for oil,coolant and gas. it suggests it to be used on the fuel pump mounting surface. do you think this is the same stuff that is supposed to seal the oil pump to block. it is a black stiff gasket and is 1/32" thick. my only other option is to buy a new pump and i don't need to do that.

you used cardboard as in cereal box cardboard ...when i bought my oil pump it came with 2 new gaskets for that b-pump surface and the pump-pickup tube surface. If it resists oil, im sure it would work but i wouldnt use it but thats me.

keep looking, you can find the proper gasket

if your block and oil pump have a _flat_ surface i dont even think you need a gasket there

you can buy gasket material and make your own gasket - that will probably work for you....

i don't feel like paying 40 bucks for a new oil pump when i don't need it, i don't know they don't sell these gaskets seperately.

actually i have been told by engine builders not to put a gasket there. Metal to metal is better. the reason they say this is because when a gasket blows you lose oil pressure. with metal to metal yes there will be a little lose but no worries of a gasket failing. I have ran my car like this for 6 years with no troubles. 65-70 pounds of oil pressure when cold and around the 55-58 pounds when warm.

i would be a little worried about doing that. this is the 3rd time to pull the motor in 2 weeks. i will do some research. they come factory with gaskets there and last the lifetime of the motor.

not true, the later motors did NOT have a gasket between the block and oil pump....

i probably will do that then because if you think about it, the bearings act the same way. they leak oil like designed and still maintains oil pressure.thanks folks. saves me time.

I still prefer to use the gasket in that area, rarely will they ever blow unless you have some type of fastener faliure.

The Fel-Pro R.A.C.E gasket kits also come with the oil pump gaskets, along with the rear seal, timing cover, front seal, water pump etc...this is a excellent kit to get for about $22.

Just make your own gasket out of some gasket stock if they are hard to buy individually.
