The oil seperator provides a path for crankcase pressure to go out the valve cover to the intake. When you've got a turbo pushing boost through the intake the pcv valve gets held shut... pressure has to go out somewhere. An NA 2.3 doesn't have this problem and doesn't need an alternate path... at least that's what I think the reason is... makes sense to me.
