Oil pressure AutoMeter Phantom doesn't work right ,anyone know how to troubleshooting

I have AutoMeter Pantom electric 5727 http://store.summitracing.com/partd...891600+4294908435+4294908432+115&autoview=sku ,this gauge is installed a few months ago and i bought itnew from Summitracing
Before when i started car ,oil pressure is loweron idle and with rpms it raise up, but now soon i start car oil pressure is 40psi all the time, i know my oil pressure wasnt that good to stays there,something must be wrong
Does anyone know how to troubleshooting thisgauge

Ernan, if there isnt a piece of crud or teflon tape stuck in the sender's orifice hole (the little hole in the threaded end of the electrical sender - where the oil goes into), I'd check the gauge.
Put your multi-meter on the sender terminal on the back of the gauge. See if the reading changes while the car warms up or you rev it, etc. If the meter's display shows a change but the gauge doesnt move, that suggests the gauge is stuck.

Autometer is cool with stuff like this and I bet would swap the parts easily.

ya i agree pull out the sender and make sure nothing is stuck in there/theres no water

if theres nothing there and it still does it when you put it back together call autometer like suggested

I don't know why it's not moving when you rev it, but I know my AM oil pressure gauge was reading higher than usual because my engine to frame ground cable was getting loose. Might be worth checking.

Ernan, if you want, you could just pull the gauge out. Check the sender terminal in the back. If it DOES change but your gauge isnt changing, the gauge itself being at fault is likely.

I'm just tryin to save you some work - I'd only pull all that crap out if I was getting new parts (and the chances of the sender getting plugged up are not highly likely IMHO).

trace out the signal wiring wherever easiest.. whtehr that be at the gage or at the sender...

Here is what i gonna try
My brother have same oil pressure gauge,same part # everything , (i installed too)
Igonna get some longwires and exchange signal wires from my sender to his gauge and his sender to my gauge and start cars and see does we both get readings from another car
Sounds crazy but it will work

that won't work becuase the gage needs to read the resistance to ground or something like that I think...

CHris, I've seen gauges work both ways. The last one I tested actually had a voltage reading at the sender terminal at the back of the gauge (it was in the 3 volt neighborhood, IIRC).

The sender terminal can send voltage (I think it might be a 5 volt reference signal) to the sender. As the sender grounds more, the voltage reading goes up.

This is my conjecture - I havent read that on AM's site or anything, so take it for what it's worth.

Had a couple of scares with this one

Hey Man,

I have had the same gauge in my car for 3 years now. I am on my third sending unit. I have had two that I blew out running nitrous and one that read a constant 45 pounds. The first time it happened was after an 1/8th mile run with a 100 shot and I got back to the pits with my gauge reading 0 psi at idle. I listened and it never started knocking so I drove it home and around for three weeks like that (I know, not the smartest thing to do but the stock gauge still read normal.) I ordered a new sender and it went right back to reading normal(for my car) pressure. I suggest ordering a new sending unit. Hope that helps.

I send e-mail to AutoMeter and here is when they said

Hello.

It sounds like a possible sending unit issue. Do you have an oh meter
that you may do some testing with? If so, let me know and I will
explain
how to test the sender.

That sounds about right Ernan. THey normally ask you to do some quick testing (like we kinda outlined) so they know if it sounds like the gauge or sender. That saves you ripping the gauge and sender out so you can send to them (if it's not the gauge at fault, that just wastes shipping fees).

If it's the sender, normally they just mail you a new one.
