Do you have to remove the dizzy to chang the t- stat? And will a 180 be ok?

I started with a 160 but changed to the 180....no problems at all......

180 is the way to go. Pretty simple to do.

I've been running a 180* t-stat for the last 6 months with no issues whatsoever. There is no need to mess with the distributer when you change it out.

180* here as well.

Stock radiator. Stewart Stage 1 waterpump. 80/20 water/coolant mix.

Lowered the high speed and low speed fans accordingly in the EEC.

Car runs about 185-190, never gets above 200 in Louisiana heat idling in traffic.

I'm gonna jump on this with a word of caution:

If you've never changed one before, and it sounds like you haven't, be careful not to overtighten the two bolts back into the housing!! I stupidly overtightened mine to the point where I but the bolt through the housing and cracked it. It wasn't that hard to do.

Also, make sure the edges of the tstat are in their groove. If one of the edges is between the housing and the block, you'll crack the housing this way too.

While we're at it, make sure your housing and intake surfaces are clean. You may want to even lightly scuff them with a fine sandpaper.

I put a thin film of RTV on either side of the gasket and also put some RTV on the bolt threads.

Install the thermostat w/ the hole in it in the 12 o'clock position.

Be sure to bleed all the air out of the system - our cars are notorious for holding air in the upper radiator hose.

The torque spec on the thermostat housing bolts is 15-22 lb-ft. Be careful that you get the thermostat in the groove right.
