The Christmas blizzard we had last week really got me to thinking about this again. May take some gift money and build up my stock.

That's quite a large index to peruse. Is there a specific area to hit first?

I never did post pics of my set up.

I will have to get off my lazy duff tomorrow.

As for the arfcom link. Here are some threads to get you started. FWIW, there is also frugal squirrel. (a little more tin foil'sh)

BOB as a gift, did I miss any basics? - AR15.COM

Unfortunatly I could not find the big bob thread. (I am also not using a browser with spell check)

Ok, I finally drug it out of my closet and took inventory. Which is a good thing, since my wife has raided it since I put it together.

This has been set up for the area I live in, and the season. Since I live in a very rainy part of Oregon, staying dry is very important. I know that cotton kills, but I cannot run around wearing wool or poly every day.

For shelter/warmth.

20x20 tarp
nylon cord
space blanket
3 each, 9 hour candles.
chemical hand warmers.

food/water.
2 water bottles.
filter
purifying tabs
dehydrated meals
Granola bars and fruit snacks (my kids would not leave them alone, so they were omitted from the picture)

clothing.

Poncho
my old military issue goretex pants and jacket.
poly socks
Poly top and bottom
goretex gloves.

Tools/misc

Ruger P89 with 3 mags and holster.
CRKT multi tool
crkt pocket knife
magnesium firestarter
Lighter.
compass
toilet paper
pen
Bright flash light (120 lumen)
First aid kit (which I will break down later)

cheapy walmart backpack. (its actually water proof).

This is my get home bag. I work about 4 miles from my house, so the overnight stuff is not really needed there. But I frequently travel up to Eugene, which is 30+miles away. I would probably have to hoof it in the event of a disaster. Earthquake, floods, etc.

Like I said, the bag is made with the very wet area I live in. We rarely see extremely low temperature. It is usually 40 and raining. I can stay alive for 3+days with what is included. With the only limit being food. It would be uncomfortable, but doable. Once the clothes come out, the bag loses most of its bulk.

I was going to add some more info about some of the stuff in there, but I forgot.

The flashlight is a 3xAAA coleman extreme, with a lumen rating at 120 and a burn time of 4 hours. I chose the AAA version over the C123 due to battery availability. You can find AAA's at any gas station, store, etc. Unlike c123, which is usually a camera battery. I do have a very bright fenix light that uses those batteries, I carry it daily.

The ruger was the first handgun I purchased as an adult. I bought it cheap at a garage sale. I rarely shoot it any more, but I have thousands of round through it. The 3 magazines total 40 rounds. I have a feeling that is too many, but its a little extra weight for alot of peace of mind.
I do not include this in my bag when I am at work or traveling. After I had my car stolen a few years ago, I do not keep anything of value in it. Plus, I usually have my CCW on me. Which would cause some heavy redundancy.

The first aid kit basically has coban, ace bandages, abd pads, 4x4's, gloves, flashlight, hand sanitizer.
The only meds I have are, benadryl, ibuprofen, tylenol, immodium.

The first aid kit is very basic, IMO it will handle the majority of accidents/emergencies. I do have the knowledge and experience/ability to perform basic and advanced medical care.
I just realized that I do not have a cpr face shield.

The candles were put into the pack, In the event that I was stranded in my car. In the freak event that it actually snows more than 2" of slush.

I choose a tarp over a tent due to cost, and the availability of trees in my area. I can lash together a small shelter fairly quick. and pile up branches to keep my body off the ground.

I do have some chem light sticks in my first aid kit. Aside from providing battery free light. They can also be used to signal. Tie a light stick to a string and spin it around. It can be seen for a fairly long distance at night.
The hotpacks were added in the event that I could not light a fire. Place 1 in each armpit, and some on the groin. It will keep you alive through a cold night. They put out heat for 8 hours. Although its pretty weak after 4 hours.

What I typically carry on a daily basis.

cell
keys
wallet
lighter
kershaw leek
watch
pager
fox labs 5.3 pepper spray
fenix tk10 flashlight
glock 19 with spare mag.

During the summer its much less. I do have an akoray flash light that has comparable lumen output, but much less of a throw.
I will also omit the spare mag and either carry my keltec.

The pepper spray is my other option for self defense. It covers the gap between lethal force and non lethal. My first choice would to never be in a situation that requires the use of anything.

First aid kits would be something important I would add that seems to be missing in some of your kits. A good weapon too because at a minimum those who don't pack well are going to get rowdy and try to take from those who do pack well.

Oh, and BTW, if they tell me I can't bring a weapon... well I'm not falling for that age old trick to the concentration camps. I think of how they did that in New Orleans, in the parts that weren't even flooded, made people evacuate and wouldn't let them bring weapons, and even seized them, I hate to say it but I would have opened up fire on them right there.

Man, you're equipped like Batman! What do you do that you feel the need to carry so many weapons?

In our area, bugging out would not be feasable IMO. We live about 10 miles from TVA's Sequoyah Nuke Plant, there is another nuclear plant about 60 miles north and another one about 2 hours south. Plus we are about 90 miles from Oak Ridge
