So, a friend got new Ford Racing 4.10 gears for his '05 Mustang GT. The guy that was installing them says that he thinks that there are already aftermarket gears in his car, he thinks that they are 4.30's but he's not sure. My friend tells him to install the new gears anyway. So, Ron brings me his old gears and says that he thinks that they are 4.30, and that if I want them, I can have them. I open the box, and look at the pinion gear, and they are indeed Ford Racing 4.30's. On top of that they are in absolutely perfect condition. They look like they have never been installed in a car. And so it begins....

I really wasn't planning on 4.30s. I was probably gonna' go with 4.10 as well, but they are free right

So, I go get a master gear install kit and some ARP Ring gear bolts. Now, I can do just about any type of work on a car....I have rebuilt many motors, gasket matched heads, and always do my own work on my cars as well as many other peoples.....but gears are another story. I don't have the tools and have never done them. I considered buying the tools and trying it myself, but with numerically higher gears, alignment becomes more critical (or so I've heard), so I just went to the same shop that did his gears and made an appointment.

Then I start thinking.....it would be nice to have a better limited slip in there, and while its getting gears is the perfect time to do it. Well, while looking at the Ford Racing limited slip with carbon fiber clutch plates I was like damn...its 31 spline......soo.....I guess it would be a good time to upgrade the axles to Moser 31 spline axles......since it will already be apart.

So, pretty soon my car will be getting:

Ford Racing 4.30 gears

Richmond Gear Master install kit

ARP Ring Gear Bolts

Ford Racing M-4204-F318C 8.8 in 31 Spline Traction - LOK Limited Slip Differential w/ Carbon Discs

Moser A883105 31 Spline Mustang Axles for 8.8in Rear w/ Studs

and just for fun an SLP Line Lock

Now for a question...I am a tried and true believer in Red Line Shock Proof gear oil. I have used it in many vehicles including offroad rigs which saw MAJOR shock loading of the drivetrain, and have never had a failure. So, anyone ever used it in their 'stang, and with what result? Also will I need to use friction modifier with Redline Shockproof?

I've never used Red Line but never heard anything bad about it. If that oils is synthetic then friction modifier would not be required but it never hurts if you add some.

I just did a 3.73 gear swap last weekend. Not hard to do it yourself if you follow instructions. Sounds like your an ace mechanic so it would not be that difficult. FRPP gears are made with very good tolerances and if you keep the spacers right and use new bearings the lash is right on. The hardest part for me was getting the pinion bearing pressed off and the new one on. The local parts store did it free with the purchase of the new bearing. I think you made the right choice having the pros do it with all the other mods your 8.8 is having done. In answer to your question FRPP reccomends using the friction modifier even if using sythetic gear oil. I went with royal purple gear oil.

I would recommend getting a Detroit Tru-Trac instead of the Ford Traction-Lok. It's a lot better unit and you will be much happier in the long run.

+1 for a tru-trac!

And btw the stock 31 spline axles are plently strong, you just spent money to have ones that say moser instead.

I used syhthetic with friction modifier, works good/last long time. lol

On a side note as well you can buy the the carbon fiber clutch packs and put them in the stock lsd rear and get the same results for alot cheaper than the ford trac-lok.
