I have a Powermaster one wire alternator on my '84. Works great. As far as the factory volt meter, I'm pretty sure their's a post on the alternator you can connect it to. I didn't hook mine up I just vaguely remember that.

IIRC, the voltmeter wiring is not even apart of the alternator regulator circuit. In other words, it will probably still work as well as it ever did.

Consider the bargain ebay alternator vs a 3 or 6G Ford unit. Remote turn-on and sense circuitry can help get optimum performance with minimal headaches.

Good luck.

6G's have been out for a long time. I'd rather have the output of a 3G however.

For any alternator with more output than stock, you need to upgrade the wiring. Period.

i myself used an alternator from the part store for a 94-95 mustang. they came factory with the 3g 130A unit. i picked up a brand new one with a lifetime warranty for like 180$.

all it takes is a little grinding on the stock fox alt bracket and a new bolt and nut (3g doesnt have threads in upper ear)

it works great, i ran a 4gauge wire from my alt post to starter solenoid with a big wafer fuse in-line.

cut the little white wire from the stock alt plug and plugged it on the 3g and left the two org/blk wires hanging there, i taped it up to clean it up.

car charges awesome (ALOT better than stock) and havent had any problems.

if you have time later could you upload a pic of your setup cause i might just go to a parts store. need to know what this fuse looks like and how you have everything mounted up.

^^^I dont have any pics now and I cant take any until monday, you should be able to find a write up on here or on the net somewhere.

This is a wafer fuse and holder. I got mine from eBay and I bought couple of spare fuses too. I just have it hidden in the ''rats nest'' with the other wires right now, eventually I want to mount it to the side of the fender.

(btw this isnt my car or a Mustang, and I have the regular crimp on ring terminals not those fancy ones)

i had a 130 amp rebuilt with a self exciteing regulator and ran a big ass wire with a inline fuse around. then i tucked the old alt. wires under the air box. works like a champ.

my fuse looks identical to the pics above. i searched one up on amazon.com, IIRC both the fuse and plastic holder was 15 bucks or so.

got the 4ga wire from the hardware store along with some brass 5/16 ring eyelets. to crimp mine i just cut the wire to lentgh, stripped it back some and put it in the eyelet and used a hammer and chisel and smashed the brass down pinching the wire and it holds really good. use a little elec tape to keep it clean.
