Hi all, Im having alittle delima for choosing a transmission for my setup. First off i have a 66 mustang with an 347 stroker estimated at around 500HP and 450ftlbs of torque. Im talking to a guy whos says a well built c4 will handle that amount of power because im leaning towards an automatic tranny, this car is mostly going to be a weekend cruiser and maybe taking it to the tracks just to post a decent time. Also i havent decided on the rearend yet for the gear setting. Any opinions or suggestions would help, pros n cons about the c4, or should i go a different route? Just imagine this was your car what would you do?

A C4 can be built to bulletproof however you have no overdrive unless you put in a Gear Vendors OD unit. Its basically some planetary gears w/ a band and a solenoid. A 4spd top loader is about as tough as they com but no OD. Or a Tremec which equals $$$. If its just a weekend cruiser why not go with a manual? Besides a manual is more fun!!

I am putting in a C4 but only because mine is going to be a fair weather driver. Any time it is nice out I will drive it. If It was a weekend warrior I would go with the Tremec.

Yea manual is fun, i can shift with the c4 also:D. now with the tremec, i heard i would have to cut the tunnel to make it fit, is that true? i dont want to do any major mods to it.

a properly built C4 or AOD will handle the power nicely. if you want a manual trans, go with a richmond 5 speed. you cna pick your first gear ratio to work with your final drive ratio, which means you could run a 3.00 final drive ratio and enough first gear to make the car think you have 4.11's. no overdrive with the richmond 5 speed though, but then you wont need it.
