Opinions on this parts car.

As I mentioned last week, I went to go check out a lead on a parts car last Saturday, so here it is. Please take a look at the pics I took and tell me if you think it’s worth buying for $500. It looks like I could at the least get the quarter tail end cap (if I don't go with the Shelby Glass one instead), the convertible bracket parts I need (and then some) and rear bumper for now, also some of the impossible to find parts like the top hooks and latches are all in working order so having an extra set just in case might be nice. Actually the gauges and lenses look pretty good too even though I don't need them. Surprisingly the chrome around the windshield looks brand new, better than mine, even though I don't need it I might swap it. The interior and floors are obviously shot from getting weathered with no top and rust is evident everywhere, but it is pretty complete, 302 engine and all, even the AC unit, that has to be worth some bucks for the lower dash section alone or keep it for a future upgrade. The hockey stick chrome trim around the boot is pretty good too, many of the parts that aren't repro'd yet are actually good, I just don't need them. Sadly the passanger door I need is already gone and the rear quarter is rusting at the bottom :(. Ironically though, it does have the one taillight that's busted on mine, but I already have more of those than I need thanks to Chepsk8 ;). I just don’t know how to evaluate a parts car and justify if it’s worth having on my lawn until next spring for gutting and what not. I’d appreciate any thought’s you have. I was lucky enough to get our buddy George's opinion from Florida Mustang the other day as I have been emailing him for parts assistance and he says it's worth the $500 for sure, probabaly even profit from it when I clean and sell what I don't need, so that is good enough for me but I'd still like to hear what the rest of you think. Unfortunately there is more of what I don't need than I do on this car, which is why my first impression was to pass on it, but I guess if money from selling the parts can help rebuild mine then it's worth it. The car is complete except things you can obviously see missing in the picture.

BTW, sorry I just put the smaller link pics up here to save space but if you go to page nine of my website you can click on them to get the full pic for a closer look. I can email full screen size pics to if someone is interested in a part for themselves (except the hockey sticks, George has dibs on them :nice:)

This one I just put for fun. I need the rear quarter glass too so I rolled it up to see if it was tinted like mine and I found this sticker. For a split second I thought it was a mexican car, but looks like it was just a tourist at one point.

Definately worth it. I'm in the middle of parting out a car for the first time. 85 GT. I've made half my money back in two weeks, I will definately make money once it's fully parted out, and I'll have a free 5.0 and T-5 outta the deal. This car seems to have enough potential usable parts (usable by you, or someone else with $). I say go for it.

well i f you can afford to buy a car that has more parts you don't need than what you do need i'd say buy it too, you can easily get your money back out of it, the question, though, is how long it will take to regain it

part'n out

I've personally parted out over 20 Stangs,Cougars and Torinos, and between you and me, if I knew where this one was, you wouldn't have to worry about buying it, 'cause it would be in my shop already :D . Seriously, I can personally see about 900.00+ in parts on that thing, and that's just from the small pics. you posted. I say buy away!!

Well, time is my only issue. I have a friend who makes a darn good second living on ebay, so he said he would help me to put the parts I want to sell up. I never buy or sell on ebay sooooo. The question though as you put it bnickel is the time to strip it and how long will it take? I'll have to figure out what to charge for parts too I guess. Not much I can do in the winter months, so it will likely have to sit in my yard all winter and not get fully stripped until the spring. At least in my yard it would be under a tarp instead of bare azz naked like it is now. The car has only been there for 2 months. Some parts are totally shot and some look brand new. As you said 1320, I would swap those and sell mine I guess. This car is beyond saving I think, I'm sure the underneath is all crumbled rust judging by the exterior parts that are rusted.
I guess it's pretty unanimous that I won't lose any money here, so I guess I should just get it. what do I do with the left over shell after though? You have to pay to have that carted off too don't ya?

BTW, the place is Tosey's in Wrentham Mass. The guy has 2000 stangs if has 1. Most are twice as rusted and stripped as this one is though. I don't think any are worth restoring but he has some unique parts left to say the least. I took some general yard pics that I can post if you want. I spotted a few rusting big blocks and a Cougar that had very good looking tailights still. I may take a closer look at those when I go back for the car.

Well, its a 17" monitor, the pic was 2x2.75 and from above, they look a heck of a lot like the late model seats. Having not owned a '69-'70, I wasn't aware they had headrests, I thought they just had highbacks like the '71-'73 cars.

I guess the 1/4 would be worth taking off and you can use patch panels on the bottom. I guess the general accepted rule is to use as much original sheet metal as you can, even if it means used sheetmetal.

For what it is worth as soon as I saw the pic I said to myself "It has seats from a fox" :D

Pakrat,
For $500, I wouldn't give it a second thought--just buy it. That is cheap. As for using the rusty quarter--don't even think about it unless you need the door pillar or some supporting pieces you can't buy new. If you are fixing your car, have the frame pulled by a competent shop, then evaluate where you are at with the sheetmetal--what can be saved and what needs replacing. You will find some will come back to workable shape, some spots will be destroyed, and others will have hidden damage you didn't know was there. Only then will you be able to decide what you can use and what you can't. But if it were my car, I would not waste time and money welding on a rusted out quarter panel only to have to patch it. I have in the past cut the supporting metal under the quarter end cap and re-used it because it was not (and still isn't) available for fastbacks after a collision. So, bottom line, buy the car and store it somewhere until you are done. You never will know what you are going to need until you REALLY need it. Unfortunately I have been there... :bang:

I had looked at the pictures you posted a few weeks ago after the crash and thought it was a definite fixer. Maybe not in the eyes of an insurance adjuster who normally writes sheets on 2002 Hondas, but in the eyes of someone who knows what it is and how to fix it--it can be fixed.

By the way, if the convertible has factory A/C I may be interested in the dash harness... [email protected]
Thanks & Good Luck!

I too sell parts on Ebay. In my opinion, the winter and spring months yield better profits than the summer/ fall. I think the difference is because most people tend to tear their car apart during the winter months and just drive them during the summer. As for what to charge, I would look at the completed auctions and go from there. Completed auctions will give you a good idea what the part sells for, or even if it sells. When you are done stripping the car, haul it to a scrap metal place. You should be able to make an additional $30-$50 depending on the weight. I parted out a Pinto last year and sold the shell and rear axle for scrap. I got $28 for what was left. I was happy.

Oh shoot, I forgot to ask, do you think that rear quarter would be worth using with the rust at the bottom? I am not sure if mine can just be re-skinned yet. After a closer look at my door I think it can be re-skinned, so I am not as worried about that now.

Oh ya 1320, trade in that 10" monitor, those are stock seats bud.

PAK, I've been real busy, and there is no end in sight, BUT Tosey's isnt to far from me, maybe an hours ride, if you have the Tme, you can use my Majicbus and Trailer and toe it to My shop in hyannis, it can stay there and I can probubly strip it over the winter and ****can the carcus. Up to you, your welcome to the Bus and trailer if you need to get it home also.

Thanks everyone for the input, and thanks specifically to you Worth. I won't decide on it until I know what the settlement is, so I'll get back to you on that. The end of this week will be just about a month and I still have no clue as to what the insurance people are thinking or doing, but if I don't feel any progress is made by then, I think I will just turn it over to a lawyer. I guess by the delay I can assume they might be reconsidering fixing it now that they got the packet I sent them and have maybe realized just what it will cost them to buy me a replacement, but I think I have been patient enough at this point.

Edit: Does anyone have a link to some good places with used rear quarters? Like in the dessert? I only know of Perogie's and they haven't gotten back to me yet.

I agree with Bullitt66

Definetly you need to buy that.

Here in my country you dont see that kind of car in a junkyard, you usually see Civics, Mitsubishis, toyotas etcc. :(

Off topic but the comment above made me remember my late summer visit to the local Pick Yard. Among all the ricey crap was a decent '68 Cougar. Now I was looking for a 'stang to go vintage racing in but this was cool. It looked like it was partially stripped :( , but basically in decent shape for the track as it was going to be stripped anyway.

You think the local yard would get rid of it  , crushed now I bet, probably not much worth selling out anyway to the pick yard people. I even asked if I could buy it when it was "done" (aka before crusher). :nonono:

Save the stuff!!
