Opinions wanted: a good price for a 69 parts car

Hi all,

Wondering what you all think spending $2500 for a 69 coupe "parts car" for my restoration 69 project. It has a salvage title, so i didn't want it for the final product (a daily-driver for my son), but I thought I might get my monies worth.

The deluxe interior is incredibly nice. Dash pad is intact, seats are great, back seat is great, instruments all work. The panels are much straighter than the junker-project I just bought with my son (for $1500) and I'm thinking I could pilfer a great number of things off this baby, including:

Dash, Left fender, both light buckets, rear bumper, both valences, misc. light fixtures, both buckets, rear seat, and other random stuff.

I think that stuff is all very expensive ultimately and perhaps I could steal what I need for the project and swap back the crappy parts.

I don't know...wondering if this is a stupid idea and whether i'd be better off just buying all this junk new.

Opinions are welcome and much appreciated if anyone has one!

If you can find $2500 in parts (and it sounds like you can) buying a parts car is a great idea. Particularly if you can't figure out how something goes together and you've got the other car still assembled.

I'd say if its worth equal or more than 2500, and you don't mind having a car parked there, go for it.

I am general against parts cars. Cars that was considered parts cars just a couple of years ago are now real nice Restomods on the road. I understand the appeal but they are not making any new classics “Dynacorn excluded” Mustangs. I know that you think you will reassemble the other car with the parts removed but I just do not see it happening. Just my .02 cents. YMMV

sounds as if you should be using the inital car for parts on the second one.lol. R titles dont mean much on the coupes as far as value and could have been just lost title or out of state sales on vintage cars (not sure though, no expert, differs state to state and wording on the titles). slap the old parts on the other and try to sell it whole. You dont sound like your trying to make money on a restoration (father/son project on a keeper) so whats the difference what the title says.

i'd really say it depends on teh reason the other car wound up with a salvage title and whether or not the work it needed was done right. the only time a salvage title is issued would be if the car was totalled in an accident or stolen and stripped for parts or had some kind of damage done to it that would have cost more to repair than the car was worth. generally speaking a salvage title does not help the value of the car any and usually hurts it quite a bit, at best it will make any potential buyer question the condition of the car or even shy away from it.

if you can find out why it was given a salvage title and determine if the car was repaired correctly it shouldn't make much difference, depending on the damage, for a driver but it will hurt considerably if you decide to sell the car later on. it may be that it would best be used as a parts car and i believe i suggested this in your other thread but i would really only part it if you determine the car is not worth a restoration or not worth using as a driver as is.

if you can get some pics of the car post them up and we can give you a better idea, i see that this is causing you some grief trying to decide what to do with the car if you buy it. if you feel that it would be better off left on the road as a driver like it is then just pass on the car and let someone else decide what to do with it.
