opinions welcomed, buying used roller rockers

theres a guy up here in canada (different provence) selling some crane cobra 1.7 roller rockers and hes asking $150 canadian.

i need 1.7's for my crane 2031 cam so i'm thinking about picking them up.

i would be saving about $100 buying these used but would have better peace of mind buying new. i wouldnt have to worry about missing bolts shims, etc. or damaged fulcrums and such.

what your opinions? get used or buy new?

i would go new......i dont know, i mean i guess they dont really "wear out" too much as there in oil, but you never know if hes dropped them in teh dirt, ect

Just thought I`d add this for info.I have those exact rockers on my car.

You`ve probably heard of aluminum rockers being light in weightin this case.

The box that the new Crane Cobra 1.7`s came in was a hell of a lot heavier compared to the box I put all my old stock rocker arms in.The stock rockers were feather weights compared to those Cranes.

I would think he'd tell you if things are missing if you asked...I bought my Scorpions used and sure as jack someone had put the ped's in wrong and put flats one em...
Cost me 20.00 from Scorpion for new Allens, peds, and guides as they're kitted anyway...
I have bought more than my fair share of parts and most people are gonna be upfront with you...If you ask...
Alot of miles on em and I would think twice...most of use run chit for low miles and swap en out anyway...

ok, after doing some research, i found out from the previous owner that he never ended up using them along with the current owner. there brand new.

2 problems tho.

1- theres only 11 shims. thats ok tho because all i have to do is buy a shim kit for like $8.
2- hes missing one of the pedestal stands. you know, one of those plates that attaches the 2 rockers together.

hes going to try to find the missing stand but if he cant will i be able to reuse one of my stock ones?

i believe there all the same no?

whatchyall think?

good chance to pick them up cheap?

Well I wouldn't walk away from used rollers just because there used. Anytime Im buying something used I want to examin them first, if they've been abused or in an unclean enviroment you can usually tell. If there not comlete I wouldn't even consider them, most of the time there not worth the hastle. In your case if there pedestals you have are the same you may be ok but be careful your treading on thin ice.

you might be able to use that little "bridge" piece from your stock rockers, i never looked at mine but im pretty sure the ones that came with my FMS 1.7RR's was the same as the stockers

ok, he got another replacement pedestal stand via mail from the previous owner.

he wants $150 Canadian firm tho. so thats about $110 US.

i believe this is a good deal so think i'm gonna pick them up

one less item on my list now

I got my crane 1.7rr from a buddy who put on AFR 185 with stud mount rockers on his 94 Lightning. I paid like 100$ I think that it was a good deal.

When he took them off he put them in a cleaned out (washed with soap and water) coff. can and filled it with oil to keep them coated in oil.

The only thing I found out about the rockers is this...You may need to buy these things called "lash caps" they are like risers for the vavle as the sides of the crane rockers will not clear mosts valve retainer's. You will need to re-shim your rockers for this extra clearance. I am setting up/redoing my vavletrain geo anyway right now so no biggie for me but thought you might want to know.

plan on picking up the dial tomarrow to check the mid lift. The trav. looks great though the way it sits. Just want to check to be sure.

I do have a question for you Tom,

That lifter, is it set to "fully pumped" with it being welded? Just wondering if I should add the 20-30 for the pre-load when I measure it? Or if since its already "pumped" if the number I get when I measure the pushrod is the final number even though there realy is no "pre-load" since the checker lifter one is pumped?

Yes, it is welded to the pumped up position. I adjust preload with the nut on a stud mount and you adjust with shims on pedistals. You can adjust pushrod length for pre-load by adding the amount of preload distance that will actually occur. Some guys do it and others don't. The preload does not have a big impact......

You can see for yourself - get the exact pushrod length you need and then lengthen the adjustable rod .020" and see how much different your pattern looks on the valve stem tip.

I say get'em, the tie-bar is the same on your stock arms.

Don't worry about the extra weight, most of it is in the roller bearing in the center. They do reduce your overal MOVING valvetrain weight, if not by a lot, but every bit counts, especially for a hundred dollar bolt-on. Make sure you put new springs in with the 2031 BTW.. and you'll likely need longer pushrods...

Your stock V/C's will fit with some massaging of the baffle by a ball peen and use the good Ford metal/rubber gaskets.

im getting the 2031 cam with the 444226 part number. this one comes with the matched valve springs, retainers, and such.

i wont know which size pushrods i'm gonna need till i put it all together so i'm gonna have to wait.

i'm currently running polished fox valve covers so i'll be good for clearance. i already removed the baffle on the inside
