optima battery

I have a 9 year old DieHard that dates back to my '67 Dodge. Never stored it indoors, never took care of it and it still works great. They unfortunately were purchased by ?Exide? I believe.

Exxide is top notch. that is what I usually put in my cars. I bought an el -cheapo from O'reilly's cause the mustang did not have a battery when I bought it and I am really paying the price now. It has lasted a meek two years and it has struggled the entire time. of course I also recently found out that if your battery isnt tied down the lead plates will rattle apart and I am sure that took a big chunk out of it's life expectancy.

Yellow tops are great for high draw applications like serious stereo's. They cost a little more but will hold a charge longer when compared to the red top. I run several red tops and havn't had a problem with them other than when I left my dome light on for a month. Gel cells in general don't recover like a lead acid. As long as you don't discharge them too far like under 9 or 10 volts they will be just fine.

The Yellow Tops were designed to be run down, the Red Tops are just a Starting Battery.

Working as a parts guy while in College i've had mixed experiences with Exide. They have excellent customer service but we often ran into problems with their product like nearly whole batches of bad batteries. I can say however that they NEVER failed to warranty any defective units. Overall i'd buy one of their batteries but i'm not sure how the DieHard / Exide relationship works. I've also worked in the ill-fated Sears Service Centers and at the time from what I saw they were the best "wet" battery available. My ancient DieHard has never been cared for and i've always held "this season is it's last" but it refuses to die. Since the Sears Auto Centres no longer exist I don't know what became of the DieHard.

I have had a yellow top in my gt for a year now with the stock alt. By mistake 3 times (leaving the mirror light on on the sun visor) i completely drained it and everytime it took a charge on the battery charger on 2 amp charge overnight. Now once a week i go out in the clod and start her up and it fires up first shot everytime even when it was below freezing. I am in love with this yellow top optima, Good luck.

I've had my Optima red top for almost 4 years now and 3 vehicles ( 1 with a huge stereo system and a 200 amp alt. with a capacitor) and has never once died on me. I've left the dome light on in my truck overnight several times and it always fires right up. Cant go wrong with the red or yellow.

yeah I have settled on a red top. the yellow is just more than I will need. I am going to pick one up this weekend. Thanks for all your help guys!

They sure do still exist - we have the Auto Centers here.......not that I would ever go to one.

Really? Everything in town was either closed or sold out to Kal Tire. You could continue on as a Kal employee but most people I was friends with ended up leaving over time. I had already moved on, they had their share of problems but it was a great job for me at the time while I was still in school.

Great choice on the red top Stykthyn I think you'll be very pleased with it!
