Now, I've read that buffing out clearcoat scratches is possible with a buffer of sorts. I've also heard that a buffer in the hands of someone who's untrained could easily result in the destruction of your paint job. So, my question is this: how exactly does one become trained in the art of buffing? I'd love to learn how to buff properly but I don't exactly want to eat holes in my paint.

With an orbital buffer and clear coat safe products, you shouldn't have to worry about damaging your paint. Just be sure and choose the right applicator pad for the application and always use products from a reputable company like 3m, Meguiars, Mothers, Zaino, etc. I just now bought some Mothers car polish called "sealer glaze" and I'll tell you, its the best polish I've ever seen. Better than anything I've tried from 3m or Meguiars.

you shouldn't have any probrem with orbital as long as you wash your car right, then use quality products. such as Mguaires.
I've seen people go to car wash, spray chit off, then use orbital....thats big NONO
