Original 5 speed car, How can you tell?

Have an original 5.0 convertible want to see if it is an original 5 speed car it has a M axle code for 2.73:1 rear gear don't think they came with a 2.73 and an auto. any one know what to look for?

A lot of people will just leave the auto ecu in the car. Pull off the passenger side kicker panel and take a look at the computer. If it is marked "A9P" then it is an auto computer. If it is an "A9L" then it was a 5 speed car. If it is MAF that is.

They did come with 2.73's and an auto (in a vert) AFAIK.

For stuff to look for: IIRC the gas pedal is different. If so, a lot of folks don't swap them.
Look for rough cutting around the shifter hole in the driveshaft tunnel.
With those gears, it probably has the stock DS. Look for a rubber damper on the front of the DS (near the trans).

Im kinda curious about how to tell as well. My 89 has 2.73's and all looks to be normal. But there is some modifications done to the shift hole, but there was a B & M short shifter put on from the previous owner, so Idk if he modded the shifter hole for more room for the shifter, or to make clearance for a 5 speed swap

I have converted 2 cars and on both the front part of the shifter hole had to be opened up more. One car I changed the computer and one I didnt. I know the tag in the door should tell the trans code but if the door was replaced that will not help. Also the clutch switch may not work you can start it with out pushing the clutch in. On the plug there is just a little loop of wire for the aod cars sometimes that is over looked. There is another plug like that more towards under the center of the dash I forget what that one is for.

I always look for cutting around the shifter hole. the trans tunnel is slightly different due to the different location of the shifter and a bracket being welded to the tunnel for the lower shift boot. to make a corrrect swap this part needs to be cut from the donor car and welded to the new car. I never see this done. also most people do not hook up the neutral safety switch on the end of the pedal assembly.
