Outnumbered By Idiots

The guy that built my engine just went to a work shop where Warren Johnson was the guest speaker.
As you can imagine EFi vs carb came up, if you have followed NHRA you most certainly know they went to EFI this year, and, by goodness you ought to know who Warren Johnson is.
So, one of the things he said about carbs, is, that, they are only efficient in a 200 - 400 rpm window.
He was also asked about manual vs automatic transmissions, and his comment was something to the effect of ... auto's do not belong in racing.
Anyone want to start an auto vs manual thread?

I'll get that started right here. So, at what HP/TQ number should I ditch my fun stick for a "hands free" transmission?

I think it starts to get a little tricky after 600 rwhp . This is what I'm learning . For the occasional spirited driver no issue . If you are really ragging on it some esp at the track it becomes tricky to stay consistent , keep a clutch in the car etc .

I think once you start to hit the 75x and above territory it's time to really think about an auto . If your into drag racing . If it's a fun car with some blasts down the highway then I don't see it being an issue .

Everyone I know in the 500+ range has gone to a 4r70w with a manual valve body or a c4. For my money I think I'd rather see a t56 in there, but I have no plans to ever Drag Race.

Racing to me at least is with a manual transmission. Shifting gears during a race is like dating women if you ain't banging it ain't fun.:p

With an automatic with a shift kit it's like marriage.:nono:

Manual valvebody is more like a honeymoon stage still:lurk:

Let's do it!
Manual transmissions belong in manual transmission classes. Otherwise no one gives a :poo: if you were shifting your ass off when you're 5 cars behind the guy with the auto. Purposefully handicapping yourself for an excuse is dumb.

There are a few "manual" transmission exceptions. There's a member on here with a sweeeeet manual setup

Now we wait :D

Hater! Just because my manual car is faster than your auto...

Because jack stands

I love manual race classes. Seems more driver "dependent"? Anyone can be consistent with an auto but completely agree with your statement about people making excuses.

If you bracket race=automatic
If you just want to have fun = whateveryouwanttorun

Oh and @90lxcoupe has a bad mambajama

Yes he does. Its purpose built. That's the difference to me. Of course you can run whatever you want if you're just trying to have fun. That's why people drag race FWD cars. That and they're stupid.

UMTR was always cool to watch. My buddy had Liberty build him a faceplated t56, spent a fortune. Took it to the track and broke :poo: time after time. There's a video somewhere of us dragging it off the track with a 4 wheeler lol. The life of a race car I guess. The guy who holds the GM 6spd record (sponsored by RPM transmissions btw) breaks transmissions and drivetrain components on a very consistent basis. If he wasn't sponsored it would be an auto by now guarunteed. God knows it would be faster. He'll tell you that himself.

Warren Johnson is referring to a whole different breed of manual transmissions.

In case there's anyone left who doesn't want to harm me, bracket racing is also stupid. :)

Do Hoosiers like anything???
lol :D
Carbs and bracket racing are loved around here. Just not by me lol

I guess the only thing I hate about bracket racing is the guys with 12 second open header cars. Just bores the hell out of me. I don't like most trucks and any motorcycles at the track either so I admit I might be the problem

Short of a toploader Ford or muncie rock crusher you're not going to find a manual that will hold up to today's competitive HP numbers. The t56 is a great transmission, but was never designed for quick shifts that you need in a 1/4 mile blast.

I never got into watching brackets. My problem with it at the time was the ten second guy running eleven second bracket. I felt cheated when they jam on the brakes before the lights.

Johnson, Glidden and a host of racers 'back in the day' row'd to victory every weekend. Technology evolves and the auto got better. Now-a-daz its whatever you prefer. Just like fwd's, me, I prefer rwd and wheelies.
If you can call pushing/pulling the levers on a Lenco "Rowing"

As impressive as that is, it's not an svo. That's just another coyote swapped fox. For the record with some progressive rock soundtrack and judicious editing my car could make the same damn video
