Over due

Last night I had to make a trip to Ontario,Ca again (which is about 100 miles each way) to drop off my wife and son at the airport.

On the way back I was driving on the 10 and started hearing a rattle noise in the back.

Pulled over at the next exit and popped off the hubcap to find that 1 of my Studs had broke while i was driving.

Made me awfully nervous driving the rest of the way home.

That was the last drive before I do some maintenance on the car.

Ordering new wheel and tire combo sometime next week(hopefully this weekend coming up).

Plan on doing brakes and rotors and apparently I need to replace my studs now.

The only thing i could come up with was that the kid that owned this car before me over tightened the lugs when he had the car,being that i use a torque wrench on everything (I'm a bit of a perfectionist).

Any good suggestions on brakes/rotors/studs?

Depends on what you want to spend. I dont know if your car is a Cobra or not, but if its a GT then you can upgrade the front brakes to the Cobra's twin piston set up and run 13 inch rotors, and its only about $500. I did that and loved the result on my GT. If you already have a Cobra though, then I guess a Brembo kit is your next step up? As for the rears, I just put on a good set of pads and new rotors and called it good. I dont take my car to the road course, so I wasnt worried about going all out on the rears.

I think it was buyfordracing.com, but 95riosnake had a thread going where several people had bad customer service from them. Just be sure you get all the little parts you need (banjo bolts in particular), and hopefully youll be ok. The kit I got had loaded calipers and 13" rotors. Im sure there are other sites that sell it. The Cobra, Mach 1, and Bullitt kits are all the same, just painted different colors.

Im sure Late Model Resto, or maybe Jegs or Summit would have it too. Otherwise you can just get some stock calipers off a '99-'04 GT and bolt them up. They use a stock size rotor, but would be twin piston vs single. I would feel like that was half assing it though, personally.

I got both cobra brake kits on my 2 stangs from buyfordracing and never have had a problem with them. Even spoke with a rep on the phone and they were real nice with me so I have nothing bad to say about them. And the brake upgrade I just did on the red mustang only cost me 189 for calipers 88 for D/S rotors and 60 for SS brake lines. And I have 0 complaints so far and have definately put them to good use.

You can get some stock replacement studs at a parts store (Dorman usually makes stuff like this), or you can get some ARP or Moroso studs from summit or some other place. I once broke several studs from my '02 GT, and I figured out that I had neither overtorqued them nor had I cross-threaded them. It was actually the threads in the lug nuts themselves; they were dirty inside, so this lead to too much friction when they were tightened with an impact wrench. The moral, make sure the threads on your studs and lug nuts are clean before you install them.

Yeah. The only problem on an ABS car is that the ABS ring on the axle kind of get in the way. You can either grind down a small part of the back side of the stud, or you can remove the axle, remove the ABS ring, replace the stud, and the put everything back together.
