Overdriving the water pump

Hello.

Does anyone know of an overdriven water pump pulley for otherwise stock pullies? Links or places to buy and/or brands are welcome. :)

I appreciate any thoughts. Thanks!
 
To answer the question, No I don't know of any Overdrive pulleys for a water pump. My question to you is why would you try? Better cooling? I'm pretty sure that if you spin the water pump too fast you'll just have cavatation(sp?) which would defeat the purpose of trying to overdrive it. Maybe a high volume waterpump would be a better idea. Just my $0.02

However I can say that on my car when I went to my u/d pullies my car cooled better... But I cannot say that 100% as I had to change the w/p (to anotehr factory one) and I also flushed the system at the same time.

But it is cooling better.

Try flushing your system and if you just changed gears or something then you may need to slow the pump down due to the higher RPM of both the engine and therefore the pump...

For the other guys: it is something I wanted to play with. My warm idle is ~750 RPM and with the fan turned off and/or hooked-up independantly (so charging system load is not a factor on fan performance), the car stays cooler when idling at ~1K rpm than it does at 750. So I thought I would play around with the water pump pulley.

Hey man, had to bite on this one. This is why most Cobra guys don't switch the water pump pulley when doing underdrive. And if they do, most have a hissy fit cause the car runs noticably warmer.


For anyone else, I would be ranting on about Stewart pumps, but you already know about those. I agree with the above, try the Cobra pulley. I also spoke to one of the big SVT guys who explained that the 94-95 Cobra oil cooler helps keep temps down 10-20*. Might be tough to do a factory unit on a GT, but an external is pretty easy. Just a though for the future.....

I have been contemplating swapping the pump, but I want to baseline recent changes a little bit more. Plus the 110* heat right now is not a good baseline temp to be wondering about stuff (sometimes even a decent system just runs a little warm in temps like that. We are at almost 100% humidity too).

A Stewart pump might be next on the list of things to try (along with a pulley). Pumps are a little pricier for the 94-95's (than foxes) or I would have done that already. Can I just order a pump for a cobra application?

If not or besides that, I will really look into the Cobra pulley. I am of the same thinking you implied (I personally would not run U/D's unless it was a track car. Not in this climate and with my liking of running electrical accessories). :D

Shane, you and I think alike. I have been meaning to run a stacked plate oil cooler for some time. In the 88 I put it off by running M1 in the summer. I need to have time to do it (I almost refuse to run rubber lines for an oil cooler - too much risk for a line failure, IMHO. Rubber hoses take a real beating around here). So I would need time to fab up metal lines, etc. I am slow and very detail oriented about making lines, so it simply takes me some time.

Is it me or are the stock GT pullies pretty underdriven anyhow? The PS pulley is freaking huge (much bigger than the one on my 88 GT). I have looked at the pullies I can see and they have Ford stamped on them (I originally thought I might have U/D's). I have not seen another SN GT to know.

Yeah, the PS pulley seems pretty big.

There is only one thing you can do. Try it out and post back w/ results!!! I bet you will see some benefical results.

You already have the manual fan switch setup right? I thought I remember seeing that in one of your posts. If not, check it out.

I also assume you have drained the old coolant and added new stuff already. Did you swap the Tstat at the same time.

How do the fins on the radiator look? Are they all mangled? If they are, bend them straight b/c the more air that can come across the rad the cooler the coolant will be.

I am sure you have tried all of this, but I thought I would add it anyway, just in case.

Good luck, and have fun in the heat. Friday I start working on stock coaches out in the heat, trying to get them ready to sell :doh: So I will be an apple very soon.

Your right it was a 93 cobra pulley. I had to make the hole in the middle of mine a tad bit bigger to fit over the center of my 95 pump.

I have a stewart high flow and a stocker and I compared them and the impelars and the inside of the housings look the same.

Yeah, the Stewarts are pricey. The bottom models are just reworked stockers if I read the site correctly. Their high end $400+ that have the crazy flow rates are nice though....... :rolleyes:

As far as the weather, we get close to 100*, but with that humidity, WOW. Thats just not right. I think my AC would have a fit.

I hear you about the rubber lines. I am in the process of doing my fuel system right now. I am thinking of the Aeromotive fuel rail kit, and while I am there I figured I would pull all the old rubber fuel lines and get some nice braided lines fabbed up. I don't have the time to make them myself, but there is a plave here that can make them for a respectable price. They make my oil pressure line for $35 braided, and to the exact length I needed.

I know about being detailed. We deffinetly think alike in that respect. I think my car is apart more than together. Took me 6 days to complete my wire hiding procedure. I am still not really done. Waiting on some finishing touches. Heat shrink and solder was the only way to go.

Alum 2 core radiator. 180 Mr. Gasket stat (installed before when I did gauges), flushed system with ~40% coolant/60% distilled water. Air dam is in place. Low and high speed fan switches, etc.

Good luck working on the coaches. Do you have some SPF 1200? :D As you know keep up the fluid intake (I am downing ~ 10-12 liters a day). I get headaches If I dont. I sweated through 5 tanks yesterday in about 2 hours. :(

WIth the car stuff, I just wanted to tinker around and see what I could do to get it running a little cooler. I have never had a water pump go bad, sans losing bearings and leaking out the weep hole. In reading posts in here, it seems like some guys notice a difference when renewing a pump (I never had noticed any definitive difference in the past when only the pump was renewed [often it is one part amongst many]).
I might decide to toss a new pump on (I am pretty sure that thing is original. 94K miles) with a cobra pulley (or get a pump for a Cobra - need to research).

You have nice hook ups for doing and getting stuff machined, lines made, etc. Good stuff! Unless Scott has some buddies and wants to share, I dont have such resources and will have to piece-meal it together myself. :rlaugh:

Glad to hear the wire hiding sounds like it came out good (And no issues from reworked power distribution, I take it). :nice:

Heat shrink and solder, blah. I like to use lineman's pliers to crimp and wrap it in duct tape. :D

I read here somewhere you were thinking of a Cobra water pump. I don't remember if they are different or not, but I know Mine has the oil cooler lines coming right out of it. Don't know if the GT one is the same or not. Maybe someone here knows if the are the same part. I haven't replaced mine for so long I can't remember if I ordered a vehicle specific one.........

Here you can see the oil cooler lines coming out of the pump. They are the two between the Dist. and the upper rad hose.......Just something I thought I would throw at you.

BTW - Sorry the engine is so dirty. I was busy that week.......
