Overheating problem....

Okay...my cay started running a bit hot today. I only drove about 5 miles and it was above 220 when I shut it off, with no hard driving. Same thing driving home, so after it cooled off I removed the cap and saw that the level was a bit low. After letting it run with the cap off, it finally reached around 180 (180* thermostat) and the level would drop real low then gush out, drop low gush out, etc. What would cause this???? Thanks for any help!

could be a bad theremostat.. could be stuck closed.. when you have the car running next time and you notice the temp rising squeeze the upper hose it should be rock hard.. if the t-stat opened you'd be able to squeeze the hose without a problem.. even possible to have a blown head gasket but start by checking t-stat

I checked the t-stat in a pot of boiling water and it was fully opened at 180*. I don't think that it is a blown head gasket, because I haven't felt any lack of power and I haven't seen any water in the oil....

its possible to have a blown head gasket and not feel any power loss.. what type of fan do you have?? ever notice any bubbles in the overflow tank after shutting off the car??

I'm running a MarkVIII fan and I haven't noticed any bubbles, but I will double check! Thanks!

Well I'm not sure if its possible but are the fans on the correct way?? don't take this the wrong way lol i have a friend with a 98 supercharged trans am and he had over heating problems.. he did everything possible to try to figure out what would be causing it and his electric fans were on backwards.. its easy enough to flip them, but i don't know how the mark VIII fans are.

try to flush out the rad give it some nice clean new fluid.

Yeah, the fan is mounted the right way... I just replaced the water pump last night... still does it! I can see it flowing just fine, but the level will raise and drop, like it is burping....but it is continuous! If I bring the rpms up to around 2k and hold it, it doesn't do it as much....but it still occurs. Also, as soon as I let off of the throttle it gushes (about a foot up). Dammit I am getting PISSED!!!
