P0340 Camshaft Position Sensor circuit fault

P0340 Camshaft Position Sensor circuit fault. My brother's 2002 GT gave him this code and started running crappy. Anyone got any ideas? He's got a cold air intake and a couple of other basic mods but it's been fine until now.

Sounds like one of the cam position sensors is toast. You'll have to change it out, it's inside the valve cover. Don't know any other quick fixes unless it's just come loose.

Thank you for the help TweekedGT, guess it's time to pull the valve covers. Would you know which side it's on or is there one on each side?

I boo boo'd. You don't need to take the valve covers off. The cam position sensor is behind the powersteering pump resevoir on the drivers side. All you have to do is to take the resevoir off the driverside head and the sensor should be behind it. If you have a Haynes manual it shows it clear as a bell, real easy. I've had my engine apart so many times I forgot where the hell it was. You can check the voltages on the sensor to make sure it's actually the problem. Get a Haynes manual, it gives perfect instructions.

I had the same problem. I replaced the sensor on my gt, but it did not fix the problem. I cleared the code with my tuner. Still the MIL came back on. I read on another forum it maybe my alternator. I got a rebuilt one and BAM! the code never came back.

you dont need a cam sensor, you'll need a alternator. I dont know what it is but 2002 up have had this issue that when the alt goes bad, it triggers a MIL for the cam sensor. Mike may have more input on this, so dont go replacing the Cam Sensor just yet.

Thanks for the heads up, everyone. I guess we'll start off with the alt since that's the easiest to check then move on to the cam sensor.

man do i love that code it took me almost a month to trace the problem to the alt. because those sensors hardly ever go bad. i think what happens is a diode or something in the alt. goes bad and causes it to interfere with the signal from the cps which causes the code to pop up

I have that same problem and I need to replace my alternator. What brand should I use or more importantly not use. What amperage should I get. I don't have any need for more amperage than the stock alt. Thanks for any help

I think my brother replaced his with a inexpensive stock replacement brand figuring if it wasn't the alt, he wouldn't be out too much scratch. That and he's a bum

Hello, I,m new to this forum but my 03 Gt has started giving me the same code. After 4 years and several mild bolt on mods, I figured something would go wrong. I read several forum articles that owners had the same problem and it was because of a faulty diode or regulator in the alternator. I replaced my cps yesterday with a brand new one from FORD and it lasted for a few start ups without a problem. Now the code is back and I will see about replaceing the alternator.
