Paint hides a lot!

Hey guys, I just visited the body shop that is working on my car, and these are some current pics of it.

This is under the front end, the part that the bumper covers up

These are the replacement parts that i've already purchased:
- Mirrors
- All weather stripping
- some gaskets
- new scuff plates

Attempting to obtain
- a wiring harness ( how long generally does it take to wire a car?)
- new steering wheel
- new rims

Edit: as you can see the previous owner did a great job covering all that up,

See the original red paint underneath?

What are the other common parts that tend to get rusted faster or tend to be replaced?

That all looks pretty normal for a 40yo car imo. In fact it's in pretty good shape. Check the rear wheel wells and in the sides of the trunk.

yeah, all i see is minimal amount of surface rust and some caked on dirt. if that is all the rust you find on the car i'd say you probably have the most rust free early mustang i've ever seen.

Well, there are spots that the painter pointed out especially on the passenger door where it is completely filled with bondo like you knock on it and its hard and not hollow. There is rust in the door places, there are small bits of rust bubbles coming out but we'll see its true rust spots when the paint comes off.

The painter has had the car for about a month now and for the last 2 weeks he hasn't done any work except move the car a few spots away. Gotta get on his case cause I wanna enjoy this car before I go off to college

Also, the previous owner installed an alarm system and with the system he installed power locks but there's no switch to them... also when the painter pulled off the door panels I looked inside and found out htat the previous owner had the power locking unit duck taped to the side of the door . Any tips on how to securely fasten them?

Edit: no doubt it, this car is in great condition for it's age, the previous owner had it since 1968, and its been garaged a lot of its life he said he drove it like 2 miles every other day. and we got the car as a steal only 6k. But there are things that he either did himself and ended up doing a mickey mouse job or he didn't get done correctly. For example the wiring inside the car is absolutely fugly, he installed an aftermarket stereo (thankfully he left the original one there) but in order to do so he completely messed up the entire wiring harness now there are tangles of wires hanging down above the accelerator pedal. As you can see he didn't bother to take off the original red paint before putting on the expensive pearl white paint, and looking at some of hte body work he didn't do the body work correctly. This summer, i'm planning on cleaning up the engine compartment.

as far as him painting over the original red paint, that is a fairly common and accepted practice actually. unless you are doing a complete resto and the original paint is in decent shape and not flaking off it's actually better to scuff the original paint, prime it with a good sealer primer and shoot the new paint. there is less chance of having sanding scratches show through the paint that way. nothing wrong at all in painting a car that way, though when doing a color change it is generally better to pull the car completely apart and paint everything.

I would pull the carpet up and take a look around just to be safe. Everything else looks pretty good to me (as others hvae also said)

Hi, I have a brand new 21 circuit universal wiring harness that I can get rid of. I bought several because they were so cheap when I rewired my mustang. It was a very simple job. PM Me if interested.

I dont know about the rest of you bt from what I can tell the car is in GREAT condition. Definetly worth 6K. This is what 6K will buy you in SOCAL.

Just got bak from the painter, and he had 95% of the old paint stripped off, and yup surprise! the car had been in either a series of accidents or had a lot of damn dents or somethin! It looks as if some1 shot a shotgun in the front and in the rear quarter panel (no holes just sharp dents). There also these holes along the top of the door under door handles. I'll take pics sometime this week. Good thing is that there's no rust. BAd thing, the scoop is total fiberglass and bs, so he's planning on making one out of metal and sticking it on.

Bondo ugh!

You've got a great car there. I wish mine had that small an amount of rust on it. When we stripped mine we found that it had been hit in the drivers side quarter or something because there was a lot of bondo there.

Pulled that off and found that rust had eaten through the wheel wells on both sides. It only got worse over the 6 years it took me to actually get down to painting it. you can see my painting adventure here http://webpages.acs.ttu.edu/jikelly/paint pictures.htm

Yep that's some bondo type stuff I used to fill in those holes in the wheel area and on that front fender. It's some kinda of fiberglass impregnated plastic filler. Pretty tough stuff once it cures, but no it's not as good as replacing the sheet metal. I expect to see light through there in 5 years.

That's ok though by then I'll have a real job, well I hope I will.

Oh a quick quesiton, does anyone know why there would be an electric fan in front of the radiator like there is now? It makes no sense to me, It turns on with a switch next to the headlights in the car but once again makes no sense why to me. I want to pull it off cause if you do turn it on it usually starts hitting up against the front valence , Btw it is being held up with a zip tie (shrugs)

Also anyone have any experience with automatic antennas? I'd like to get one but I would also like to get a head unit with Hd radio in it, will I stil be able to use the same antenna?

Check underneath the carpet on both the drivers and passengers side floorboards. They tend to get rusted out pretty good throughout the years. also pour some water on the grill vent and see if it leaks inside and if it does then you have a cowl leak and that can get pricey if you can't do it.

No idea how that could happen

He told me he will use as little bondo as possible, he will take off the fender and roll it as straight as possible. However, he himself is not working on the car so i'm not sure.
He said that he'll start the body work tomorrow, and then hopefully by next week it'll be painted and i'll get it back and then i can get stuff like a wiring harness, subs, etc... Then summer i'll pull out the engine and paint it.

But then I saw this on another thread but I don't know wat color it is, I like the fact that in the dark it looks extremely dark but then when light hits it it is actually a really rich red, which you can see in the second pic if u look at the top.

Hmm, I see I really like the other red though, I don't know how to describe it, i'll take the picture to my painter and see if he knows. If he tells me i'll definitely let you guys know what color it is.
