I own a performance red (paint code ES) 2000 3.8l and im planning on ordering a 2004 takeoff bumper with the same paint code.

I checked my local ford dealerships to do a side by side comparison between my car and a 2004 torch red, but unfortunately they did not have any in stock.

Im told after 2000, they changed the name of the paint from performance red to torch red, but they still share the same code. I have been told that there could be a variance in the shade of red due to the difference of the year that they were made, even though they still share the same code.

Anybody have any insight on whether this is true or not? I would like them to match as closely as possible.

Thanks

After four years of driving around in the sun, even if they could match the paint exactly, you are still going to get a variance in color shade. Even though the original color shades may differ from year to year, the color codes are also accompanied by a year code as well. This way, the shop can mix the paint to what was originally on your car for that exact year.

When I put an after market hood on my car, I had the shop color match the part, which includes painting all the surrounding body parts as well. This is expensive and I wouldn't recommend it. You might as well order the bumper from somewhere other than the dealership and then hunt around for a decent shop that does collision work to have the bumper painted. It shouldn't be more than $100-$150 (including prep work - NOT including fitting and final assembly).
