After 25 years, I'm ready to paint my 65 coupe again. Back then, I painted it in lacquer, 6 coats and lots of sanding and buffing. The paint came out great, but 25 years takes its toll. I've done enamel on a half dozen or so daily drivers I went through over the years, but I want to do something better than that for my Mustang. I have read up on urethanes and that seems to be the clear way for me to go this time

Anyway, my question is this. For a Mustang that is restored to stock with mostly original and original Ford replacement parts, will a 2 stage urethane bc/cc look out of place? Or, should I go with a single stage urethane? I love the wet look of a good bc/cc, but I don't want it to look out of place. What does everyone recommend on an orignial stang?

It depends on what you mean by looking out of place. To a judge it would stand out but to most Mustang lovers a professionally done bc/cc paint along with the rest of the car restored with quality parts and workmanship it would add to the look. I suggest go with what your heart tells you. You said you love the wet look so I say go for it. You've had the car for so long and it looks like you are planning to keep it so make it what you want.

You can use either single stage or bc/cc since you have a solid color. Single stage can be wet sanded and buffed the same as bc/cc.

Thanks. Since I really do like the looks of a urethane paint job, I'm going to pick up a gallon later this week. I'm leaning towards the bc/cc combination, but I'm not ruling out single stage just yet.

Does this car get parked outside much?

Rarely do I park my Mustang outside. Pretty much sits in the garage until I take it out and hit the road.

I think the single stage paint has more depth.

If you're gonna drive the car a lot, forget it. Two stage is the way to go because you can abuse it so much.

I miss the Imron I used to buy in the 1980's.

Well, I finally did it. I picked up Dupont chroma bc & cc and painted the car yesterday. I used 1/2 gallon of base, along with the basemaker, for a total of one gallon. It was just enough to cover the primer. After that, I shot 3 coats of clear and now I'm done. I'm happy with the results with the exception of 2 runs I put in the clear coat. I was trying to rush things, I guess. I've sanded those out this morning and shot some more clear over those spots. For a home garage job, I'm happy with the results and I have attached some pictures of the car.

I have a couple of "dry" spots and I'm wondering if they can be buffed out. If so, what should I use? Wet sand and then compound, or just compound?

looks good

i put 5 coats of clear on mine ,then wet sanded with 1500, then wet sanded with 2000,then buffed it it came out as smooth as glass also has a good shine to it
