Does anyone have a good way to strip body paint off of chrome and stainless steelw ithout damaging the underlying metal? I'm trying to correct the mistakes of the morons who painted the car.

won't steel wool leave scratches ont he metal?

I believe "aircraft" stripper will do the job if you move fast and clean up any left over.

I agree. You can get it at any farm supply store. Auto paint stores have it but they over price it.

use OOOO steel wool. Anything else (like OOO) will scratch the chrome. But the OOOO will polish it up quite nicely.

Now just have to figure out where a farm supply store would be in Metro-Atlanta (I mean...really, it's Atlanta!)

the walmart down here in nm has it, they also have a deffient kind of just auto paint remover that is easier on the metal then the airraft spray.

If the parts you are trying to get the paint off of are installed on the car then PLEASE do not use the aircraft paint stripper.....if even a drop hits the paint, especially new paint, the results can be disasterous. The best way to get the paint off is with steel wool and dishwashing liquid cut with some water for a lubricant. You can use the steel wool dry also as it starts off a little easier but I like the results of the lubricant and it makes for no scratches. Use at least 0000 like mentioned or even 00000 if you have the patience.

Here's how I stripped mine:

a. Industrial razor blade in straight sturdy holder. Hold the scraper at a 30 degree angle into the paint then pull back in straight even strokes. Paint jumps off the car body!

b. Since razor blades are straight edges, you can't get into some curves. In this case use brush on paint stripper and rags.

The beauty of doing it this way is you get paint chad with no chemicals in it for 90% of the car. Simply vaccuum up and dispose of chad in the trash.
The rest doesn't require much stripper and so the mess is minimized.

Yes, this is WORK! But it works and is cheap! Cheap is good!

that is the way I strip paint off the body too....but he wants to get if off the brigthwork that the bodyshop got paint on while painting the car so I don't think he wants to take the paint off the body just jet.

I would be very hesitent on using a chemical paint stripper on chrome. I would bet that it will discolor or eat away at the chrome plating also.

I'm sure coke would work as well as water, anyway. I'd rather drink it, though.

We used to use Coca Cola to loosen up cable "pull in" compound that hardened up in metal conduits. It turn that stuff to jelly!

I wonder if brake fluid would work, it sure took the paint off my steering box when I was working on the master cylinder .
