Painted brake calipers

What is the best way to go about painting them? Can this be done on the car or should they be removed. What kind of prep/paint? Powder coating?

It's a lot easier with the calipers and brackets off of the car. I picked up a set of take-off calipers and brackets and painted them with POR engine paint. I did mine in Ford Blue and my sons in red. Both came out great. The thing about the POR paint is that it is such a thick pigment that it takes about 24 hours for a coat of it to dry, but it is as tough as nails. Mine were done two years ago and they look as good as the first day I painted them. One coat will do, but I put on two just to make sure I got everything.

I used the duplicolor kit you can find at autozone. Still looking good almost 2 years later. I did it with the calipers on the car.

I used the duplicolor kit with the calipers on. It wasn't the best way to do it but they turned out pretty good.

Tr7driver, I also used the Duplicolor kit. It worked well and I like the result. About prepping, I would say read, understand, and follow the instructions to the letter. They include a spray can of cleaner in the kit, but that should be followed up by sanding with a fine grit, and cleaning with detergent like Dawn dish detergent. When the surface is really well dried, you can apply the paint. Like any other paint, it has to be mixed well.

The brush supplied with the kit is OK, but I bought two 1" bristle brushes from my local hardware store. Apply a coat, let it dry for 15-20 min and take a look for missed spots and touch them up or apply another coat. You need good light and rags to cover the rotors and the floor underneath. You'll probably drip some paint, like I did. If you have a good coat on there, let it dry overnight. I did the driver's side calipers on Saturday and the passenger's side on Sunday. All told, it took about 3 hours per side (most of that prep and drying time). And I took time out for lunch.

There's another kit out there, I forget the name. It is also very good, but it is about twice the price of the Duplicolor kit.

I used the G2 kit, purchased off of Ebay. Great kit, very durable. Painted them on the car, no need to remove the calipers. The G2 kit comes with a can of brake cleaner, worked great. Highly recommend it!

The brush that comes with them sucks. Definitely get a different brush. My brakes were almost brand new, so I just sprayed them with brake cleaner and went to it.

painted our front ones sunday, used the spray paint though from Duplicolor, not the brush on. did them on the car, and the hardest thing was taping everything out, i didn't paint the mounting brackets, only the caliper itself. i didn't want too much red. might go back and paint the brackets black. as for prepping, i used wheel acid, and just let it sit for a few minutes to clean the calipers real good, then hosed them off and let them dry. they look good...

+1 for Duplicolor kit. Works awesome. MORE than enough. Paintbrush fell apart when I was done, though. Long lasting looks great. Short sentences.

I personally used the brake cleaner they provided and a second can. Sprayed the crap out of them until the cleaner was dripping clear or my head was spinning which ever came first!

While spraying I would also use an old toothbrush to get the build up off and spray again.

On painting, I didn't mask in the traditional sense. I cut pieces of cardboard and held them in place to mask off the area. I also used a small brush (fine detail brush) along all visible edges. Then used the brush that comes with the kit to finish off the surface areas.

I did 3 coats and added some decals.

+1 for the G2 kit, put four coats on and looks great! Plenty of paint left over and the kit comes with everything you need.

I used a rattle can of VHT Brake Caliper, Drum & Rotor paint, good to 900F. I used cardboard to shield from overspray and 600 grit to knock off any paint that got on the rotor.

Might also consider doing your valve covers. Did mine w black VHT Engine enamel. They almost look like they have been powder coated, looks awesome, not to mention $6.00 worth of paint opposed to $300.00 plus for a set of after market valve covers.
