I was wondering if anybody on here has repainted the consoles and dash of their Fox Bodies? I dont want to do a different color or anything, its just that the grey coloring is faded and is stained in some spots and I didnt know if it was typical for people to just repaint them?

Yeah pretty typical for people to do it for looks, or resto. I believe most people use dye for the actual dash pad itself, but I just used regular paint on the trim pieces.

oh cool!! I just wanted to make sure before I went and purchased the paint! Do you know if you have to sand down the parts any? or just clean the parts really well and paint over them?

Oh! and with the dye, whats the best way to get the dash pad taken care and colored properly?

I used the stuff from 50resto.com kinda pricey but it works good and is a nice color match. They have a paint for the plastice and a dye for the vinyl. They also have a primer for the hard plastic parts and a vinyl prep for the soft parts.

I changed colors on mine. Cleaned everything very well with alcohol the primered and painted. Use several light coats and let dry in between.

On the vinyl, I used the vinyl prep which has a cleaner in it and also softens up the viny to grab the dye better. Turned out nice, cant even tell it was red anymore.

Did you sand any of the hard plastic parts?

How many cans paint did it take to do the hard plastic parts?

Whats the diff. between the lacquer and vinyl cans?

Get the red scuffing pads (brillo type pads), adhesion promoter, and Duplicolor interior dye (not sure about the grey color). I did this with my black stuff and it came out great. Not sure on how well its going to hold up as the stuff isnt in the car yet, but it looks good, and should be easy enough to redo if some spots start to wear!

Exactly how mine looked, and does look. Went from red to black, and it looks identicle to that. Much cheaper than going with a different color by buying all the panels.

I am also going to vote for SEM vinyl dye. Hands down it is the best stuff I have ever used....and I have used a LOT of different spray paints/dyes over the years.

Depending on the material being sprayed, you don't need any primer or clear coat. Some materials are harder for the SEM to bond to, such as the rear 1/4 trim panels and the door arm rests. Everything else is easy, such as the entire dash and center console.

Every peice of interior has been replaced in my car, from all different interior color donor cars. My dash was grey, center console red, ect ect. Right now it looks stock black. I use Landau Black, which is between gloss and flat...matches stock perfectly.

I used brake clean to spray all my parts down, then added a few layers of the SEM dye. You don't need to do a thousand thin coats like you do spray paint. Three or four fairly thick coats will do fine. When it dries it will look perfect.

As for the tougher materials like the door armrests, a bonding agent or many thin coats will work better.

I'd do that in a heartbeat only I dont know what color gray ( my interior is the light gray color) to get that would be closest to my stock color!
