Painting the Dash

To 68Converted. Thanks for the pics. The dash looks great, very impressive. Am I right that the color is a gunmetal type gray?
I went ahead and spent 6 hours stripping my dash to bare metal on Saturday. I'm about 90% done on the visible front of the dash, but I also intend to paint the top, even though it will be mostly covered with the dash pad.

I lied... oops... I moved over the holidays and just now pulled the box of paint out and the paint is the Dupli-Color Gunmetal Gray #T177. It looks so much better in real life. The pics just don't show the true color. I used the Dupli-Color High Temp Engine Clear as the top coat. I did the same thing you did. and just sprayed everything. I still have to coat the back/underdash with "undercoating to clean it all up but that will be down the road. I plan to do the seats in a similar color as the dash with black inserts. Should look real sporty but $$$$'s is the issue for now to keep me from doing anything now. Good luck with your project!

The factory paint was not really black, it was a very dark grey, much like the pictures 68converted posted. I used those rattle-cans that they sell from the resto-shops in whatever color they listed for 1967. I think it turned out great, can't comment on the durability though since the car is not running yet.

Yup. I tried the same "paint" that Edbert used. (love his project) It was very expensive, did not cover real well and the color "depth" just did not look that great to me. Almost like it went on looking sun faded??? I don't know, I stripped it all off. (FYI- use a green scrubby with some stripper on it to do the doors and all other patterned metal) keeps it from getting worn down as you scrub the old enamal off)

I like the metal flake in the paint I used in the end. Just looks so rich. And I ended up using five cans of Dupli-Color which cost as much as two cans of the "original" enamel stuff. It's all personal pref. I suppose.

Thanks for the compliment!

Making me with I'd done more research into the paint though...hope I don't end up regretting it. That paint has a very subtle metal flake to it, I was suprised when I saw that, never knew there was a metallic paint on these old cars. Heck I didn;t even know the black interiors weren't "black" either. The difference does make the deluxe door panels look even better with that contrast though.

You are right, coverage wasn't great, but I was putting on VERY thin coats so it wasn't really a problem, didn't want to risk any buildup or anything.

I used that "aircraft stripper" you can get at WalMart, it took the old paint right off, but the 40-year-old primer was much harder to get off, the wire wheel in the air-grinder worked great on the smooth stuff. Thanks for the tip on the textured portion, hopefully I wont have to use your method soon!

I like the gunmetal gray color a lot. I had planned on using semi gloss black...........but not any more.

I hope it will look good overall. The exterior base will be Lexus Blue with Bright White stripes. I think it will look cool. Anyway, if you have any direct questions, PM me. Later

Progress report on dash painting. The dash was completely stripped of paint including the A pillars. It was then wiped down with Eastwood Metal Prep, prior to going over it with a tack cloth and then priming with Metal Etch Primer also from Eastwood. I then laid on the Duplicolor T177 Gunmetal for the dash and a black for the A pillars. This weekend I'll finish off with the clear coat. All paints were spray cans. Check out the photos, I really like the gunmetal.

Are you saying you ordered black and that is what came out of the can?!! I have original paint on my dash and it is very black, not grey at all. Yours looks fantastic but I think your cans were mislabeled or something. Which black did you order? I have seen a regular black and a charcoal black metallic listed for 67.

I ordered the metallic, it is (supposedly) an original color, and I think it looks better than plain black. My current Mustang (purchased in 1988) was regular black, but I don't think it was original. The only other classic Stang I've had with a black interior was a 67 FE-GT that I purchased from the original owner in 1983, it too was regular black and I'm sure it was original interior paint.

FWIW, the image in that picture looks lighter than real life, that was taken with the top down, outdoors on a bright sunny day.

I put three coats of clear on the dash on Saturday and it looks great. I pulled all the tape and paper off after the clear had dried and the finished job looks sweet.

New project, the interior roof.

You are correct it is now basically vinyl dye. They banned the paint they used to sell because it was not as enviromentally friendly as this new stuff they sell now. I have yet to use it so I do not know how well it covers metal.

Anyone have any experience with this new vinyl dye / interior paint that the Mustang vendors are selling now?

When did the tree huggers get that law passed, and is it in all 50 states or just granola country (Kalifornia)?

The paint I used was purchased in 1999, maybe I got the good stuff.
