part swaping for 5.0 conversion?

A friend has an 87 Mark VII with 58k miles. It runs, and he wants $850 for the car. So I'm thinking about replacing my 289, which needs head work.

I'd like to know what I can move over from the 289. Will my 289 distributor [w/ pertronix] work with a 5.0 cam gear? If not, how do i hook up the ignition module?

Any recommendations on fuel pumps? 7psi? Is a regulator necessary?

Pros and cons of v-belt vs serpentine? The dampner is probably the same price as a new 5.0 alternator/waterpump/steeringpump

I'm going to keep the 289 oil pan, oil-pump pickup, carb, intake, and long-tube headers. I'll buy a Lokar oil drip stick, flexplate, and radiator with driver-side output. I'll pull his AOD for a core when gas reaches $10/gallon, until then, the C4 will do.

I thought about buying 58cc AFR 165cc, but I'd still have a 289 and the compression would be 8.9:1. I'd rather have a roller cam, more cubes, and forged pistons. Maybe 165cc with an E303 down the road.

You'll need a steel cam gear on the 289 distributor. As for fuel pump, if you swap the front dress from the 289, you can keep the stock fuel pump, just make sure to swap the fuel pump eccentric too. Simplest way to swap is buy the 50 oz 4 bolt damper and 50 oz flexplate.

the early cars use a 3 bolt damper, you can buy a conversion damper for just over a hundred bucks IIRC, then you can use your existing front dress, radiator and dipstick. that's the way i would go if you are going to carb it.

I'm familiar with the 50oz made for v-groove pulleys, but I'm trying to understand the pros/cons of electric/mech fuel pumps and v/serpintine belts. I like the idea of using the 5.0 clutch with a new rotary A/C compressor.
I'm not worried about modifying the radiator...the guy who's selling the car owns a radiator shop and will help me move the outlet over :)
