Okay, here’s the deal. I have a ’66 mustang, and I’m going away from stock. I’ve made mods on the interior and other upgrades.

Here’s my question. I bought a high rise, dual quad intake/carb setup with a Mr. Gasket street scoop for the 302. I’ve installed it, and kinda like it. (I haven’t had the hood done yet).

However, I’m not a car guy by nature, and I’m enjoying learning the ins and outs. Here’s the question – will I get grief for this setup by other car guys? I’m concerned that the perception will be either 1. Overkill or 2. Too much show and not enough go. Or maybe there is something else….

Could I get your thoughts? Constructive criticism and thoughts would be appreciated.

Whatever you want

I had a 67 convertible I kept stock and it was a great car that I really enjoyed. I sold it in order to finish a 67 fastback I'm doing the wway I want to. The FB is not a Shelby, not a GT, so why not make it something special and modern that I want to drive?

There are many purist out there that will rag you, but the bottom line is, it's not their car. It's yours. Follow your vision and make it anything you want it to be.

I respect stock, but if Chip Foose didn't vary from stock, he'd just be another restorer. Instead, he creates one of a kinds.

somebody did the same thing to their 65 a while ago. I think it was speeddemon1965 or something like that. He caught a bunch of flak for it. Personally a setup like that on an otherwise stock car, or a non heavily modified car, is as you said" too much show and not enough go". If your car is complete with massive tubs, and a sheetmetal wing on the trunk the high rise would fit perfectly.

But I forgot to mention if you like it, that's all that matters.

Personally I don't like the drag look on a classic car. I see them occassionally in shows and magazines and I skip over them. I love cars that have a sense of art brought about by their creator. Not just scoops and huge engines, but cool paint schemes, eased lines and skillfully modified sheetmetal. However I'm not the one who drives your car... you should build it the way you want it. When I look at cars, if I see something I don't like... I don't mention it, unless accosted about it. No matter what, my reason tells me that others have reasoned this a tasteful mod and executed it to the best of their ability... I always respect that.

Thank you for the replies (and please keep them coming).

One of the reasons I like the look is because it is different. I don't think I'd have this internal delimna if it was blown (which I'd prefer, but I'm not sure if a 302 is the right application). If its blown, then the looks there, and the power is there. But, I don't have that, so I'm torn.

My preferrence is don't put somthing on your car just to put it there, Have a reason or function for it. Do you drive your car in a manner that the tunnel ram is doing what it is designed to do, or is it just for looks?

agreed, you first need to have a vision of what you want YOUR car to be. then build the car to that vision. no matter what you do, you will always have people who will tell you that they would have done it differently. the thing to remember that it is your car, NOT anyone else's, and thus you can do whatever you want to it.

In my opinion... putting dual carbs, high-rise intake and a tunnel ram scoop on an otherwise stock engine is like sticking "supercharged" badges on the fender of a car with a naturally aspirated engine.

It can look like overkill if you have stock exhaust manifolds, a stock distributor, etc.

At car shows, I am always turned off by inconsistancies like that. Tunnel ram through stock exhaust manifolds = poser.

Yes, A wing that came factory on a '70 mach1. Plus.. if you look at that wing it's very obvious that it's purely ornamental and anyone with 1/2 an ounce of car knowledge knows it's not there for downforce.

Now, some of those 2 tier airplane looking wings I see on civics... I could almost agree with you on. But even then...I don't think there's many people who look at it and think "Wow, that car must be fast".

To each his own dude. I really try to think that, and I do, but I think I would still think bad thoughts inside. But it doesn't matter it's your car. And I am sure there are aspects of my car my people don't like. Like drag racing a classic. But piss on them, and the people that don't like your idea. ( Yes I realize I also would be pissed on. )

I've got to agree with 10sec... It's your car, do what you want with it. Everybody has different tastes, and often they will conflict. If it's different from stock, some people will like it.. others won't. It's just the way the world turns.

BUT.... if I was to look under the hood I'm sure I'd shake my head and wonder "what is this guy thinking?"

Luckily, it isn't quite as bad as a high rise on an otherwise stock motor. The entire motor is upgraded ... ignition, headers, etc.

I was just told yesterday ... "Who puts the gas in the car?", that is who you have to worry about.
