Pertronix pointsfree dist. ignition module for 289/302

i have been thinking about replacing the old point stystem on one of my 302's, but dont want to dump in a ton of cash on the mod since i dont drive it all that much.

anyone know if they are a good enough improvement for the price? does the ignition spark at and above 4000 rpms improve noticably with these little kits?

I have used Pertronix over a year and I am happy with it. I did notice better response and little more kick in the pants, especially above 4000 rpm. In my opinion, they are good for upgrading ignition system, especially if one doesn't want to spend too much $$$$.

i concur, i love mine, make sure to get the petronix 12v flamethrower coil to go with it

Is the PertronixII any better than the Pertronix I know it cost more but is it better?

I have had the Pertronix ignitor on my car for about three years now and I have had no problems at all. I paid $60 for it. I kept the stock coil on the car with the thought of upgrading it to the pertronix coil, but I never got around to it. Anyway, once installed, I found the engine to run smoother than with points. Then, of course, I needed to change the points anyway. Overall, it's a good investment and takes all of 15 minutes to install. I do not know anyone that has used the pertronix II, so I can't comment on those.

I've run both and truthfully, can't tell the difference between the two as for performance. I DO notice that the Ignitor II doesn't start missing when you get a "hiccup" backfire thru the carb when it's cold, the Ignitor I did.

after reading this post in particular, i went out and bought the Pertronix Ignitor II. thanks for the testimonial

finally got my Ignitor II in the mail yesterday. installed it and noticed a very pleasant improvement! i no longer feel a choking of power at and after 4000rpms! when i stomp on it

I had one fail at willow springs and strand me and another one failed in San Dimas Tow charges are expensive. carry a spare

Just keep the old set of points in the glove box----- just in case. I've had both my Pertronix units now for going on 4 years and neither has ever failed.

Had mine now for over 10 years and 140,000 miles on a warmed up 302. Never any problems, but I keep a set of new points and condensor in the little tool box in the trunk just in case. The engine runs smoother and dwell is spot on. I consistently run to 5,500 RPM with no misfire. Also have an aftermarket Jacobs coil (same specs as the Pertronix coil, I think) and 9mm spiral wires so those help, too. I run the plugs at .055 gaps. Been thinking about the II model with the second spark box, but will wait until I do the next engine which is on the stand and waiting. Compression and power is just so good on the one that is installed that I don't see any reason to swap it (yeah, Mobil 1)!

I've got the Pertronix in both my cars, the 320 has had it for about 5 years. Did "cook it" once, apparently when I let it idle for about 15 minutes on a hot summer day. Also have one in my 69/351C in the old Mallory dual point distributor.
