Ford has started a campaign to retain their use of the "mustang" name. In the process they are going after well established companies, magazines, websites, etc that use the Mustang name. They are biting the hand that feeds them for all intents and purposes.

Here is the online petition to stop em. (Just in case you think, "why would ford listen to a petition". It stopped them from replacing the Mustang with the probe in the late eighties.

I'm going to have to mull this one over before I take a side... it is their trademark afterall. Just makes me wonder why they've decided to do it now, instead of years and years ago.

I so signed that in the 300's  but in reality, from a business standpoint, I understand wanting people to drop the Mustang name to a degree (Mustang Vintage/Classic Parts and ect they had an agreement that was fine 10 years ago), but to go off and DEMAND DAMAGES? no, that I completely disagree with. But Chevy and Dodge did the same thing, hell, you don't see Texas Supra Parts because Toyota will NOT allow that (and rednecks drive true late 60's/early 70's muscle cause it's faster and more aggressive sounding lol). Is Ford really big and mean because they are trying to have the sole possession of Mustang in terms of car stuff? Not really, every manufacturer does it for all their cars.

Don't have the original article:

“Readers, we need your help in convincing Ford that their efforts to shut down businesses and websites that have helped build their brands and loyal enthusiast base are doing them more damage than good. Submit your well thought-out and civilized comments here. Within the weeks to come we will send these to the highest ranks at Ford. (Below is the story we posted on May 23rd.)

Apparently Ford thinks a way to improve its image and sales of Ford cars is by alienating the very enthusiasts that loyally buy Ford vehicles. In another one of Ford’s “Bold Moves” they have sent a letter to Mustang Plus, a Stockton, CA based Mustang parts retailer, asking them to stop using Mustang in their business name. They have also sent similar letters to an untold number of other businesses, such as MustangTuning.com and California Mustang. Rumor is they will soon come after magazines, websites, and clubs that also use Ford, Mustang, Thunderbird, Falcon or other Ford brand names.

The Feb. 16 letter from Howard, Phillips and Andersen, a Utah law firm representing Ford (and other automakers in the past and present) on intellectual property enforcement matters, asked Mustangs Plus to:

» Transfer to the automaker the registration for mustangsplus.com.
» Submit to government offices all forms necessary to discontinue registration of the Mustangs Plus name.
» Cancel Internet and telephone directory listings and advertising under the Mustangs Plus name.
» Turn over for destruction all signs, banners, business cards and collateral materials.
» Issue a check to Ford for $10,000 in damages.”

In defense of Ford, the 10,000 in damages are probably to cover the legal fees. these law firms are incredibly expensive, and mor that likely it was the law firm that is assessing the fee so they can show numbers for settlements to other potential clients.
