Picked up 88 motor, question on cylinder walls

I picked up an 88 SD 302. Took the block today and sanded the gaskets off, tapped the bolt holes. Degreased, pressure sprayed and wd-40'd it. Everything looks pretty good, for the most part. The question however is about the cylinder walls. A couple of the walls have a slight discoloration to them and have VERY VERY slight perpendicular scratches. The crosshatched look great. what u need to do is go down to auto zone or kragens and they a have a spray u can spray on it and it will take those scrtches rite out.i dont remember wut its called but i used it and it works wonders.

What did you use WD40 on? It'll rust if left amongst the elements..

The block, and then wrapped it up in a trash bag.......uh oh please tell me I'm not in trouble

If it's wrapped up in a bag it might be OK, i'm not sure. But they sell an aerosol rust protectant for exactly that, and it works awesome (much better than WD40).

The scratches could be from a ring that had a slight burr it could also be dirt etc...

I would just run a hone through it to knock the glaze off and give it a good fresh surface for the rings to seat to.

Never heard of a spray to remove scratches from cylinder walls...

Wash the block down with some hot soapy water, use air to dry it. Oil down all metal parts that will not be painted, paint the block. Keep oil on the parts until you assemble it all.

The rust preventative spray is awesome I use it all the time but it must be removed/cleaned off before final assembly.

What should I use to paint it( I know, probably a dumb question) Should I tape off where the gaskets go and the thread holes and stuff.......geez being a noob sucks

What about the discoloration. Look almost like if you we're to leave grease on concrete for a while. Anything to do with the pistons?

do you have the short block disassembled?
or do you just have the heads and intake off?

You can use Duplicolor High Temp Engine paint, found at Walmart. I use a color then use the clear

Discoloration is hard to diagnose without seeing it. I don't know what you plans are but you could take it to your local machine shop to be honed, hot tanked and have new freeze plugs and cam bearings installed for a little over $100.

I'm gonna do all that myself today. I have everything necessary at my disposal.

The stuff I use is called Rust Check, and it comes in a chrome/green aerosol bottle (like WD40 etc). Wherever you find lubricants or WD40, you should be able to find some of this stuff, or something similar to it.
