Slide hammer with the puller attachment works great. The main problem some people have is getting the puller's arms on the right location.
There are two grooves cut into the pilot bearing. These are the grooves that you need to get the arms of the puller onto.
The grooves are opposite each other. Mine were at 3 and 9 o'clock. Once I got the arms in the grooves, it came out like butter.
When I didn't have them in the right place, I just destroyed the pilot bearing and didn't make any progress.
