Ping Ping Ping, all i hear is friggin Ping

when i first bought my car it had slight ping at full throttle. So i asked the previous owner what type of gas she used and she told me regular. So i up graded my fuel to plus, and problem pretty much cleared up Then a few months ago, it started happening again so i uped my fuel grade to super and it went away again. But now its back, and pinging worse then it ever did. I tried ultra, but it didn't work. I am thinking it needs a full tune up like plugs wires cap rotor, but from what she said that was all done about a few months before i bought the car, and those parts shouldn't go bad within a year and a half should they.

I think i migth check my timing to see where its at. where ddo you guys usally set yours to. I have a automatic, and the car is bone stock.

Also, is there anyother kit out the besides the motorsport kit that comes with the cap, rotor, plugs and wires. Somthing that might be upgraded a little.

Stock timing is 10, I have mine on 12 and running 87. You might want to also clean you MAF sensor

I think I have read somewhere where people cleaned theirs and it stopped pinging. You might want to wait to see what other people say. I have also read where people tried to use seafoam for pinging.

the temp out side can make it ping also if youve ever noticed you can run more timming in the winter than summer...... but ide dump codes

Gap the plugs tighter, .040". Change the wires if it needs it. Clean the MAF and change the fuel filter. Also buy a can of injector cleaner. Check the timing. In the summer when you use AC set the timing to 10 on low-grade. 14 for high-grade. Move acorddingly.

not to get off subject but how come you make all that power and only run 11.5 1/4 mile time????

CLEAN YOUR MAF!!!

If your car is in proper tune, it IS your MAF. My car pinged like a SOB and I tried everything. I finally cleaned my MAF with electronic cleaner (spray) and it INSTANTLY went away. I can stand on the gas, uphill, with the A/C on full blast in California-summer-weather without the slightest ping whatsoever.

My neighboor has a stock 95gt w/100k miles. He said it was starting to ping. We cleaned his MAF with the same can of spray, and it completly went away.

Just cause the girl you bought if from said it had a tune up recently doesn't mean it did. Just a thought, but it's fairly cheap to do, maybe you could try that if the MAF does not clear the issue.

Never hurts to clean the IAT while doing the MAF. The same contaminates which dirty the MAF also hit the IAT. Index the IAT when reinstalling it.

One can check the values of the ACT and IAT (they are thermistors) to see if they are close to being calibrated.

Some folks like to use top-end cleaner.

If this only happens at WOT, I would want to ensure that you have decent fuel pressure at WOT. Be sure the filter is not too old (or that the tank was not run near empty since its last change).

If that dont do it, get a TwEECer. (I get closer every day).

ok i will check the MAF sensor in the morning.

Can i use brake clean to clean it. That stuff cleans everthing, and i used to use it my stator on my quad, and all the connectors so i am pretty sure its safe, but if you guys have a better household remedy let me know.

What about the kit from motorsport, ther cap rotor plugs and wire kit. Is there an alterniative kit that is better or should i just stick with that one.

Are you talking about the tune up kit like Downs offers?
There is another kit IIRC - I think Andy used it.

i dont know what it may have said before, but now it says 10.96 @ 143.58. judging by the trap speed, i would say a really crappy 60ft. is the reason for the high et's with that amount of power.

I got my kit from downs ford. I forget how much it was but only problems I had is that I didn't get to choose wire colors and they are kinda long.

Is there any gaskets that need replacing when cleaning the MAF?

You need a tamper proof torx bit and some electricl cleaner take it out and clean it, you might want to take the throddle body off and clean it to.

Nothing is needed except a can of electronic cleaner (It's self-drying). If your intake box is stock, remove the big plastic housing with your MAF inside (Unplug it first), just behind the air filter. Take the outer plastic peice off, which will just pop off with a screwdriver, and remove the maf. Spray the hell out of the little sensor (don't worry about spraying to much, it dries up and won't hurt anything). Put her back together and your done.
