I have a 2002 Mustang GT 4.6L. For the last month or soo i have been trying to figure out this bad pinging problem i have. The car pings (Spark Knock) when under half throttle, and it's pretty bad.
I bought an SCT tuner from American Muscle and have been using Bama Performance Tunes. Every one of the tunes pings no matter what octane gas is in the car. I have tried using 93 Sunoco Octane on an 87 tune and the pinging continues.
As soon as the car is returned to stock the pinging goes completely away. I emailed Bama and requested new tunes in which they could retard the timing and that didnt work.
I changed the fuel filter and ran a can of seafoam through the car and neither really helped.
The only thing that i feel may be causing the problem is that i have a coolant leak from a blown gasket. I continually add coolant so that is not a problem and i plan on getting the leak fixed sometime soon. But can a leak cause this much pinging?

Also i added a bottle of Octane booster and that completely resolved the issue. But i don't want to have to add a bottle of OB everytime i get gas. So in other words something is causing my gas to lose octane. I have tried every brand of gas out there.

If anyone has any ideas help is much needed. Thanks.

It's the tune. BAMA tunes are good tunes but the timing on them is horrible. The only time my BAMA tunes didn't knock was during the coldest winter months, otherwise they knock all the damn time. I also talked to them about the knocking so they wrote me new tunes and assured me that there wouldn't be any detonation.......wrong, they still knocked.

BAMA is notorious for pinging tunes. I would find another tuner (VMP, Brenspeed, Torq, etc) and run one of their tunes. As far as an immediate solution, you can always pull some timing out of the BAMA tune by reducing the global spark option on the SCT tuner.

I thought this sounded familiar:

You've already been told what the problem is. Find a different tune(r).

...and not to be rude but... Is that a snow-blower attachment on the front of that thing? Where does the snow shoot out from?
