You can buy the pinion depth tool from Summit for about $29.95, and then you will need a dial caliper to check the depth with the tool installed.

Try this.. first locate the tool!! usually a dial indicator on Mag stand, then 99% of the time .. this is fool proof!! just watch for that 1% ..LOL

8.9 rear.. 1) remove the cove after the rae axel is on stands! 2) remove the drive shaft and the pinion locking nut, using the axels to keep it all from turning in you hand.
3) center punch the end caps, and the carrier. Like 1 dot rt lower, and 2 dots lft lower dont mix them up! remove the C clipes and then the axels. Dont drag the axels out and you can save the gaskets/seals. 4) remove the main supports..NOTE: Keep the Bearing races and the SHIMS on the correct side!! Pull the carrier out !! Cake yeah>>>? Cool.

5) remove the ring gear from the carrier, some time a hammer will help in the seperation, tap the ring gear! Clean the surface, flat file the surface.. install the new ring gear, torking to correct value ( 65 lbs) 6) from the front of the housing and remove the drive shft coupler ( Flange.. what ever..lol) then from the back of the housing, pull the pinion gear out!! note there will also come tow bearings and a crush sleeve. Looking at the pinion you will see a bearing pressed on it.. between the bearing and the pinion is an ALL IMPORTANT SHIM!! you will need to press the bearing off and remove that shim!! 7) Place the shim on the new pinion then the bearing ( or new bearing if the orig is bad.. noisey!!) slide the crush bearing and other bearing on , and slide back into the housing from the rear.. slide the coulper back on the front and tighten up the nut till there is about 20-25 ftlbs of drag on the pinion turning. This is putting the correct amount of "Pre load on the pinion gear. NOTE: if a new crush sleeve is used, make sure you have a GOOD impact wrench.. it is a bear!! Now install the carrier section with the races and shims in the correct place.. careful.. the shims / spacers will shatter when hammered hard.. " fit them tohether and in install the correct end caps, in the right side and and direction White lead the ring gear.. turn the pinion and check the pattern and the back lash... !! Cake so far!!

99% of the time all is right on or way within parimiters set by ford!! I have done over a 100 sets and never had any issues, as of yet!! LOL
Hope this helps you and others..

The pinion depth is set to the housing!! as well as the side shims for the carrier. SO using the old shim is right on what is needed!! RTV the back, add the lube..make a SHORT DRIVE and then let the gears cool off!! If there is a NOISE as soon as you move.. then the procedure was wrong... STOP and do and check it again.. cause one trip around the block will trash a set of gears FAST!! cool>??
